Most of my curiosity revolves around the vex, just cuz their space/time tricks make some interesting stories. The rest of my curiosity is for the fallen, just cuz they're so freaking cool with their insatiable sense of honor. (Ref: Cayde's gf that he had to kill... Just cuz they fought together to survive didn't mean she was supposed to let him live, or him let her live. So out of consideration for his valor, she made his choice easy by letting him kill her. How baddas can you get??) If I had any curiosity left over I'd give it to the hive, but I don't really care about their wanna-be goth attitude. Vex and fallen are my favorite.
Despite all that though, I'm gonna ask you a series of cabal questions. Just cuz they're not getting enough attention in this thread or really anywhere.
I mean c'mon!! Think about it... From what I know, the cabal we are fighting are a small renegade group, split from the rest of their kind right? So...
Why did they leave?
What are they trying to accomplish?
If they're looking for something or someone, or trying to establish a 'base' of some type, why are they so determined to not pass further than mars in our solar system?
What's the awoken's relation to them right now? Hostile?
A very common philosophy of war states to not get killed. Any strategist can verify that. So why are the cabal so idiotically throwing themselves into a losing fight (proof: they're making ground (abandoned bunkers) they're losing troops (sand giant quota to dust eaters is far off from where an army's veterans numbers should be) and they're armor/weapons are poorly maintained (no solider in any 'uptight' army would ever allow that many nicks and dings on his equipment without asking for a replacement. Since there's yet to be a replacement, I'm guessing it's either cuz the cabal command has given up on the soldiers (a sign of defeat) or given up on the mission/s (a very sure sign if defeat))) on so many fronts? I can see them being able to beat the vex or the fallen or us, but all of us all at once?? Why take on so much... Why don't they ally with us to beat our common foes? Why are they aligned with the darkness, why don't they just be like "hey Bob! Let's stop fighting these humans! I bet they wanna be our friends."
If you can power your way through all of that, and answer every single question, you will be named lore journey-man.
While at first, it seems that the Cabal are here to conquer, to expand their Empire. However, they actually appear to be running from something, most likely Oryx and the Hive. This explains why they stay at the fringes of he inner system: they are afraid of encroaching on Hive territory. The Awoken don't seem to have too much of a beef with them right now. They could possibly create a temporary alliance when Oryx comes

Still doesn't add up dude, they've been on mars for hundreds of years. I mean c'mon, where's the wife and kids they're trying to protect? When running from a foe, you don't make trouble for yourself by finding new enemies. Especially when the enemy of your enemy is that enemy. I'm just saying there's lots of reasons to not shoot at a guardian. Why are the cabal attempting it? Yet they run from hive? Also, why are their weapons and technology NOT geared to resist oryx? Have they spent the last centuries just picking their noses?

Wait a second HotBG... Dude that's it!! They're trying to hack time and dimensional travel!! The vex might think they're honeypotting them, but the cabal are honestly trying their hardest to learn how to get the hell outta dodge!! ... Except it still doesn't make sense why they're fighting guardians -.- And why they suck vs vex. Seriously... Do not wear solar shields vs vex. That's DUMB. And arc/solar damage is NOTHING to vex!! What're you thinking val'dumbas??

They are designed to fight Hive, not vex. They were ill equipped for Mars and it's challenges (though they are doing ok).
-
Ok welllllll... Makes a little sense. But again, why so hostile? And how king have they been here on Mars?
-
They were most likely running away from oryx while the rest of the cabal empire was busy fighting them, or they were sent to Mars to figure out the black garden and vex secrets. The former is more likely, as they are ill equipped to fight the Vex located on Mars. However, while running from the Hive, they stumbled upon the Vex and the black garden. At the time, humanity was still on Mars, hence the hostile take over. Remember: the cabal blow up moons just for getting in their way. They are extremely aggressive and militant, which means diplomacy isn't an option, even when facing their enemy.

Their arsenal is built to fight Hive. Explosive weapons are good for staggering large targets, and the minigun is great for mowing down Thrall. Phalanx shields look like they can withstand a cleaver blow, and Colossi could definitely face off against an Ogre. Psions are small and quick, perfect for taking on large, lumbering Knights

I'd really like a real answer from ruin, these are barely even remotely answering my questions. If they're really running from oryx, why'd they run to our solar system and start fighting us? It doesn't add up. Further, I re-emphasize, they're obviously losing. They're taking staggering casualties and are fighting an enemy that is almost limitless in it's resources. Any tactical thinking general with half a braincell can see the vex minions aren't the enemy you should be fighting. Even things as simple as 'shoot the gate to stop the endless waves!' didn't need to be explained to us. Yet the cabal seem to be struggling with it. And for Pete's sake if they're really honestly running from oryx then why the CRAP did they fight us?? Isn't it obvious we've got a common enemy? And why the heck are they not focusing on technology and weapons that COMBAT hive/taken weaponry. For a military focused space traveling advanced alien race they're dumb as bricks. Which I can't accept. There's no way bungie could be so lazy. There's gotta be a better reason. Ruin?

The answer to your question about thier tactics is also explained, simply put, they appear to be winning, the vanguard seems to think that the vex are honey-dicking the cabal, drawing the cabal into a war of attrition that they may or may not lose, but that doesn't matter, because the surface of Mars is not the vexs true goal. The exclusion zone is described as "ever widening" the cabal stick with it because a. It's what they know and b. It appears to them to be working

The Cabal are believed to be a rogue force, running away. They only invade our solar system because they are fleeing from Oryx.
-
The Cabal aren't exactly invading us, they are running from something.
