I would argue that dropping the atomic bombs saved lives. Not just American lives but lives around the world. Without the bombing of Japan we would have never really seen the terrible effects of these weapons, and we may not have had a second thought as to using more powerful weapons on the Soviet Union because we would have had nothing else to see to make us think about our actions.
