I just got an exotic from a purple last night on a moon patrol...Hawkmoon. My second one, and I definitely didn't feel like I earned it. People are nuts. I guess someone could 'technically' say they 'earned' Thorn, SGA, Pocket Infinity, etc because of the multiple steps through the exotic bounty. But, I agree with you 100%...there's no earning in RNG.
