Should humans that are in a permanent vegetative state due to significant damage to the brain be euthanized or not? Please post why or why not. Please keep the discussion civil, and respect each other's opinions.

Yes. They waste valuable medical resources that could be used for more salvageable cases. Doctors these days have a pretty good idea of whats recoverable and whaf isnt

If I ever got to the state where I can't function on a daily basis without aid then I rather die. Being locked inside your own body must be torture. I couldn't live like that.
-
I think it should always be the next of kin's decision. Me personally? If I was going to be in a coma for the rest of my life, in my head I would have a picture of Shia LaBeouf saying, "JUST DO IT!"
-
It should be in your damn will. I had a will before I was 25.
-
Put it in your will, people
-
If possible attempts should be made to try and communicate with the person to see what they want. If they cant family should be asked. I know that i would want to be euthanised if i were paralysed
-
Put yourself in the persons position; if you could look inside and say without hesitation that you would be ok with never being able to speak with or to interact with people ever again, and that you would be ok with people waiting hand and foot on you for huge sums of money at your families expense then yes you can say euthanasia is wrong.
-
Definitely. Also those with terminal illnesses should have the option to die with dignity instead of letting their disease claim them.
-
Yes; they're not there anymore and people need to be let go. If I was in such a position and I could (hypothetically) see myself hooked up to a ton of shit keeping me alive when the chances of me waking up are close to zero.. just let me go bruh.

I think it is, put them out of misery

Edited by Wythelastman: 8/14/2015 4:02:03 PMYes it is humane I suppose, if they are permanently vegetative and there is no hope of resolving it in any way. Then again it would depend largely on what the person would want, for instance I would want to be euthanized for sure, but there are people who wouldn't. bump for thought

I think it depends on what the family wants. We have a girl in our family who has the brain of a one month old baby. I believe she is nine. They don't know if she can hear or see. Her brain is very damaged. But they would never euthanize her. I'm not sure if she is on pain or not. But she does cry when she's hurting. I think if they were completely helpless and in a lot of pain that it could be likened to someone who was living off a ventilator. Sometimes it's best to let them go. But I think that's something only the family can decide.

Yes. They're not exactly doing or thinking much for obvious reasons and it's a waste of resources and money to keep them going. If I ever became a vegetable, I would want to be put down.
-
Yeah, we're just wasting time and resources keeping them alive.
