I'm pretty sure excluding people because of their gender is sexist and also discrimination so in turn this clan is sexist to males and should be taken out of the forums

That's cute. Basically what I said but defended by rhetoric. My answer was more succinct I think. I do have a question. If women have no power then why are they such a force to be reckoned with in the media? I read your article, I invite you to read, Bias by Bernard Goldberg. He shines a light on many overarching problems with the media but also includes a section on men bashing and how poorly men are generally treated in the media. Most of the time in ways that would be unspeakable if the roles were reversed. Also, the possible effects this has on young boys growing up in this new reality. One such example includes a bride who had been jilted at the altar who was asked by Katie Couric on her NBC show about the appropriate remedy: "Have you considered castration as an option?" she asks? No one batted a collective eyelash. Imagine if you will, if Tom Brokaw asked a man who was abandoned at the alter, "Have you considered cutting her breasts off?" I'm trying to figure out what would happen first, immediate dismissal from his position or suicide once he realized the public flogging he was in for, for the rest of his life? My original post was just to poke fun at exclusionism in general and the silly dudes who actually want to join an all women clan, but if you are actually trying to justify real sexism I'm afraid I have to strongly disagree with you. I'll step down off my soapbox now.

  • Yes, we're so very powerful in the media. http://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2014/02/19/women-under-represented-in-media-across-platforms-report-finds. http://mediasmarts.ca/gender-representation/women-and-girls/media-portrayals-girls-and-women-introduction. http://therepresentationproject.org/films/miss-representation/ http://feministfrequency.com/tag/tropes-vs-women-in-video-games/ My point was that sexism requires actual structural power to set the rules of the game, power women do not have - not in the broader media, and definitely not in gaming. If you want to take that in a way that means I think sexism is good, then you're willfully misreading the article. Providing women with a safe space to connect with a gaming community is what we will continue to do, regardless of whether or not you want to find a reason to step on a soapbox. Thanks for the bumps, we're happy to be at the top of the forums.

I fully support your right to have an all female clan. It's just too bad no one feels the same way when situations are reversed, not just here but almost anywhere any group would like a safe haven among like minded individuals. Correct me if I'm mistaken, (and I'm sure you will) but wasn't Dads of Destiny taken to task over not allowing a woman to be the head of one of their branches? And isn't it telling that DADS of Destiny knew they HAD to be careful not to exclude females in fear of the certain backlash it would provoke? Yet it still happened all the same just because they had the audacity to make a rule saying bare minimum the leaders of Dads of Destiny needed to be in fact, a dad...

  • If they were, and I don't know the answer either, it wasn't by me. As far as the conversations I've had with members of this group, no one here has any issues with Dads of Destiny. They have a particular mission, and we respect that.

  • Originally I was just having some fun. It wasn't meant to be offensive. I can tell you are used to defending yourself against those who's purpose is to insult. But if we are going to be political, all I'm saying is don't be one of those people who thinks fair and equal means fair and equal for "us" not them. I'm an educated, well read individual who will be the first to champion the cause of the downtrodden. And while it's true for a very long time the scales have been unbalanced for certain groups the answer is not to swing the pendulum to the other extreme, but to find a happy balance. We can't over correct to the point where another group is socially repressed. I'm sure you are an expert on female social issues. All I'm saying is take a minute and just examine how men are portrayed on day to day basis as incompetent boobs, incapable of managing even the simplest tasks. The Katie Couric incident is just the tip of the iceberg. There can't be separate sets of rules for different groups. Either we are equal or not. Either we can all take a joke or we can't. It's that simple.

  • Nothing I've said has said men are never portrayed negatively, or that it's ok to do so. That doesn't mean that media at large is controlled by women, and it doesn't mean that our society, taken broadly or within gaming, has corrected to the point where women are equal. From where I sit, we're not even close, so we're hardly in a position to be able to overcorrect. The article I posted pointed out the difference that I see between sexism and discrimination based on gender. I'm a fan of neither, and our group, while female only, isn't intended to create an environment that promotes either. It's about creating a safe space for women to game, which is needed. We don't have a problem with other clans pursuing their own unique missions, and we understand that providing a space for one group isn't a threat to any other. If this is really about a joke, then let me point out that you posted in an online forum, where there is no tone of voice, no facial expression, and in this case, no shared history between us for anyone to know for sure this is a joke. If you take a look down our thread, you'll see a number of comments just like yours that were in no way intended to be jokes. It also might help if your first response to mine didn't lead with, "That's cute", language that in many contexts is generally intended to denigrate the intelligence/relevance of the person on the receiving end. If you want to make jokes, perhaps think about the medium and context first.

Point taken. However the article you posted came across to me as very, "it's impossible for women to be sexist." Which is not a stance I can agree with and seemed to prove the post where I jokingly said only men can be sexist. Just like women don't want their daughters to grow up being told they are empty headed sex objects that should be OK with men slapping their asses, I don't want my 3 yr old son to grow up being told he is a bumbling idiot and just needs to be OK with how women treat him because they deserve their turn to discriminate now. We will just have to agree to disagree on the subject of women's power in the media. I never said they control the media just that they are granted far more latitude than should be OK with regards to derogatory remarks about men. The post which I refer to as joking was my original post for an alternative group for the bozos that keep asking to join. In which I reference the little rascals several times. I thought that was a dead giveaway that it wasn't serious. In any event I've enjoyed our discussion and hope the posts do bump your forum. Hopefully your clan is more active than all the ones I've been in lately. I'll take a closer view on women's issues if you agree to try to see how men are being unfavorably portrayed in most media outlets and in ways that would outrage women's groups if the situation was reversed. I still highly recommend Bernard Goldberg's book, Bias: A CBS Insider Exposes How the Media Distort the News. http://www.amazon.com/Bias-Insider-Exposes-Media-Distort/dp/0895261901#productDescription_secondary_view_div_1439168333012 There's clearly room to improve on all fronts. Peace. (really) JPM

@ Aveon You clearly are not familiar with the rules of discrimination. Only males can be sexist and only non minorities can be racist. Welcome to America! :P
