You're an idiot, you start at the level you are at currently

And everyone is at level 20. Light will no longer affect player level. We will all be 20. The reason it won't matter is because you probably already have gear with 168 light. They couldn't force you to be whatever level you happen to be at the time. What if you're wearing VoG just for the fun of it?

Here's more proof, don't say something unless you're positive.
-
That's not "proof." That's a forum member with no relation to Bungie posting his inaccurate interpretation of what DeeJ said.
-
That's not just a member silly, but whatever. People seem to be taking what deej said and analyzing it to much, he's a human. Not a robot. When it is clear that you will not return to level 20, I will come back to embarrass you.
-
That guy has absolutely no ties to Bungie. Ask him. You aren't "returning" to anything. You are ALREADY only player level 20. You gear is what make sure "34." Activities won't have recommended levels any more - they will have recommended Light amount. So, if you wear what is now "34" gear, you're just as powerful at 20 as you are now.
-
Light level also still matters, they said it doesn't raise your actual level but it does make you stronger, such as doing skolas when you're level 32
-
In the interview deej was asked what about people that are around light level 26 and he said something around the lines of being. Able to complete challenges and level up quickly. I think it's pretty clear that we will stay what level we are but the levels until 40 will require experience
