That's not vanilla. Vanilla is the original Vanguard, original crucible, original Dead Orbit, etc.

VoG gear is in fact considered "Vanilla" gear. Actually, all gear from Year 1 is considered "Vanilla" gear. Until TTK releases anything you have or will obtain is "Vanilla" gear. If you want older, original gear then specify. For example: Destiny, Destiny: VoG, Destiny: TDB, Destiny: HoW. So far in year 1 there have been 4 different and distinct periods, if you will, of gameplay and gear. Destiny without raids, first raid, second raid, and then arena challenges with Iron Banners and the new Trials of Osiris as well for multiplayer

They are talking about the original gear sold by the factions. (ghost angel, dust walker, etc.)
