I strongly suspect that most players are going to hang onto 1 or 2 antiques. There are some of us who are holing on to our starter armour and our Kvostovs for goodness sake!
I am CERTAINLY going to hang onto some weapons and armour that I will be keeping purely for posing. Purely for bragging rights.
On a more technical note:
Old weapons and armour are still going to work fine in old content - that 365 TDYK or Grim Citizen is still going to ruin every mob in the base game, TDB & HoW.- it will only be in the NEW content that these weapons start to lose their power.
Sure new weapons might ruin base game mobs even faster, or even more spectacularly - but there are no points for style and speed - unless that is a specific personal goal.
I know some players limit themselves solely to endgame content - and if that is your archetype then you may have to adapt your weapons faster than others - however players like me who cover a wide variety of levels of content depending on mood will have much more use for a varied inventory.
And if you come across some asshat who insists that you only take new weapons in patrol with him... just leave. If someone claims you can't beat Atheon without the new "go to" weapon - lead your own fireteam into the raid. If someone demands "lvl 40 with max all Hakke for Crota checkpoint" then laugh in their face. Ridiculous people shouldn't be bothered with.
