They made the entire first year of this game completely pointless and a giant waste of time. You spent how many hours playing to get Legendary/Raid Weapons and Armor? You spent how many hours getting Etheric Light to ascend gear? You spent how many hours farming resource nodes in patrols? GRIND GRIND GRIND GRIND GRIND!!!
Destiny was nothing but a Grind. This is how they justified their lack of content. This is the excuse people who defended the game would use when people said the game was boring and lacked content. They needed a way to keep YOU and ME engaged with the game past the fail story missions, so what did they do? They made it a "Loot Driven Game" with RNG designed so that players WANT to spend hours and hours going back and redoing the SAME ACTIVITIES over and over and over and over again for the SOLE PURPOSE of acquiring enough Vanguard/Crucible Marks to get those Legendary Weapons and Armor from the vendors. For the SOLE PURPOSE of going through and beating the Vault of Glass and Crota's End to get that Raid Only stuff.
And why? Why did people do this? Because the vast majority believed what they were told. Believed that it wasn't a waste of time. The Dark Below was a precursor to this, and many quit the game as a result when they tried doing it then as well. It should be no surprise that people would be pissed off, because they already attempted this and everyone had the exact same reaction to it before. That's why they introduced Etheric Light in House of Wolves, and that is the main primary reason for many who decided to come back to Destiny.
But its just a huge slap to the face, though. Regardless. Because even after they give us Etheric Light, which became the center focus of HoW for the Prison of Elders? They now suddenly decide that they're going to take that away and no longer continue doing it going forward. Really? And they don't expect people to be pissed off or rather they are confused that there is such strong negativity towards all of it?
Basically, TTK is entirely a different game from what we got. The video above details this perfectly.
Year 1 just never happened. Bungie is just sweeping that shit under the rug. Which is fine, that's whatever. I agree, the first year of Destiny was a piece of garbage and should be burned and pissed on. But what about all of us morons who spent $100+ on it? What do WE get out of all that? They -blam!-ed up, they made all these mistakes and had all these problems with the game. So why do WE have to suffer for it? Why do WE get screwed over because of it? TTK would not have even been if not for us who paid into the franchise already, and yet nothing is really being done for us. We're being disrespected in the most assholish way possible by Bungie/Activision.
That Year 1 Triumphs thing isn't worth shit. An Emblem? Don't care. A black Shader and Sparrow? What good are those? Those are cosmetic items that generally ALWAYS get replaced by something else. Prime example, I have the God of War shader which I love, why would I replace that? For some vain attempt to try and garner respect from total strangers new to the game? No, that's silly.
I want continued ascension. This shouldn't even be up for debate. You put Etheric Light in and people were still grinding and getting the new weapons and armor for both Dark Below and House of Wolves DESPITE having the ability to further upgrade their old shit. SO QUITE CLEARLY PEOPLE WILL STILL USE NEW WEAPONS AND ARMOR EVEN WITH BEING ABLE TO CONTINUE ASCENDING THEIR OLD SHIT.
We ALSO see PROOF that you can in fact add to the replay value of activities by using Gear Ascension as a mechanic for such. People WILL spend hours taking on very difficult challenges to be able to do so. There is nothing at all wrong with this and it obviously gives people more shit to do in the game. How is that a BAD thing?
You can be excited for TTK all you want. The problem here is Bungie's decisions regarding Year 1 content and how they are basically eliminating any sense of true progression by not respecting the amount of time and effort invested in the game.
Fact is, YES, this DOES actually matter and YES, this IS a big deal to MANY players who WILL be quitting the game because of this and only further destroy the game's reputation along with that of Bungie who clearly don't give two shits about player feedback like they claim that they do.
You all remember this interview? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3DLTPQwB10
Fast forward to 4:27 where DeeJ talks about increasing Vault space because they acknowledge players want to be collectors and hold onto their stuff. That you can bring the Guardian you've created with you into Destiny 2 and going forward.
Hate to tell you this, Bungie, BUT THAT INCLUDES OUR GEAR AS WELL!
God -blam!-ing DAMMIT MAN! WHY DO YOU MAKE IT SO HARD FOR PEOPLE TO ENJOY THIS GAME!? SERIOUSLY! YOU ARE YOUR GREATEST OBSTACLE FOR DESTINY! You take one step forward and then two steps back. And it wasn't even YOU who announced this, instead we gotta find out from Game Informer? What the -blam!- is that all about?
You ask us for our feedback, we give it to you and then what happens? We get Weekly Updates where YOU tell US how WE feel about things. You guys are putting out a shit ton of weapons. Good for you, here's a cookie. People are going to obviously go out and get that shit REGARDLESS of still being able to continue ascending all their old shit. The POINT is that it NEEDS TO BE A CHOICE THAT PLAYERS MAKE ON THEIR OWN NOT SOMETHING THAT IS DECIDED FOR THEM!
Period.
EDIT: As anyone can see looking through these comments, its a very divided subject. However, as I have pointed out to others? Continued Gear Ascension does not, in any way, shape or form hinder TTK or prevent players from getting and using the new stuff. Players will do so either way regardless. And when I ask people "would it really bother you if Year 1 weapons and armor could still ascend?" most generally don't respond to that or actually answer with "no, it wouldn't bother them" and of course it wouldn't. It wouldn't bother ANYONE because we ALREADY WENT THROUGH IT WITH HOUSE OF WOLVES. Etheric Light was done, its real, it happened. It didn't bother anyone, it didn't hurt the game in the least and a vast majority of players reacted quite positively to it.
It won't hurt TTK. The only way it WILL hurt TTK is if you don't include it. Because people WILL leave. People WILL stop playing. You think that is silly? Screw you, that is YOUR opinion and obviously not how everyone else thinks. And THAT is the problem here, other people being arrogant and self-centered enough to think that they have a right to dictate how others should feel or think about something. That is WRONG, no matter how you look at it.
YOU MUST RESPECT HOW OTHERS FEEL. There are many who have legitimate reasons for wanting to keep ascending their old stuff. It is THEIR RIGHT to feel that way. Deal with it.
EDIT #2: For those asking, yes I have seen the IGN Interview with DeeJ. No, my opinion has not changed.
It is insulting that Bungie's response to us about this is that "those weapons will always have a place for use in VOG" which is total bullshit. No one is going to keep and use the Fatebringer in Vault of Glass when there are other weapons that will have a higher damage value. More damage will always automatically mean making less stronger weapons obsolete by comparison.
Old Legendary Weapons and Armor need to be able to continue ascending. That is how many of us feel, and that is not going to change. End of story.

I am going to be sad to be able to not see my Fatebringer etc carry on and be the beast they are in the Taken King missions quests and the New Epic raid i'll still keep hold of them because whenever i want to run a Crota/VOG again i'll be using my year one gear in them seeing as they'll still be great in those raids and other missions from year one So therefore i am happy to see what amazing guns Bungie have lined up for us in TTK and will at least try them out to judge if its a crap decision to leave year 1 weapons behind however i think we all should at least test the new weapons before making a judge on Bungie's decision on Year 1 weapons
-
One of the main reasons is probably so new people coming into the game don't feel that they start at a huge disadvantage to others. Just imagine someone starting Destiny right now going into crucible and trying to get into a raid. It's not just the lack of knowledge but the gear gap with weapons will set them back awhile. I see both sides but can't settle on one. I'm a day one player and would not like to see my weapons and armour become obsolete, unfortunately it is a staple for mmo's
-
You know what happens if year one weapons aren't made obsolete? Year two weapons are obsolete.
-
The problem with the Y1 weapons is that Bungie did a design error. Those weapons from the Vog or Ce ? Too powerful. if they want to make any gear good, they need to get rid of the old ones, because the new will always be compare with the old. And what will be the verdict ? The old weapons are better than the new. Ask yourself : how many players used only HoW weapons to kill Skolas ? Here's the answer : none. Because the old gear was too good. Then why ascension will you ask ? Because people kept whining. Don't take that personally. I grinded for all those weapons too, I have all raids weapons. Am I sad that I won't be able to use them again ? Sure. But am I angry ? No. We have to move on.

Can I get my 3,000 hours of my life back?
-
You make a lot of great points. I'm mad about the year one weapons, but I think I'm more upset that this info leaks 6 weeks before TTK. So between now and September 15 (assuming that the game does drop) the game is pointless. I was leveling my black hammer, and tumours lash and the rest and for what? Yesterday I did Dragon strikes just to do them knowing if I don't get an exotic, I get nothing.
-
Bungie is making up this game as they go along. They released a game that was in transition, or in beta, and then sold cut content to give us something to look forward to. Deej's interviews should have riff tracks, even he didn't sound convinced by his own boasting. It's makes me sick to hear him say, "feedback is important, and we're listening", because is sounds so hollow. His words just get lost in the echo.

Malphisto it sounds like you're kinda disillusioned and disappointed. I just recently came back into gaming and I think Destiny is a most amazing game environment, rendering, scope etc unbelievable, colossal amount of work required to put something like this together - amazing achievement. I do agree with your sentiment though, updates and DLC should complement what came before not undermine it, the story lines let it down badly, love the freedom offered by patrols but again after a certain point you wonder why you're doing it, became almost redundant with HoW anyway as did doing Erin Morn's bounties - just no point but she's still there standing in the corner making you feel bad for not going over. Thought the Reef was a good spot for development before HoW but again underwhelming when it arrived (nothing new except lazy condensed action, super short story lines, which I almost forgot about they were so ridiculously brief, and difficult/frustrating for the casual/solo gamer to achieve success with but you have to grind it out to level up, (feels a bit dirty pimping yourself to get a fireteam going for PoE). I think they've just struggled to fill the arena they've created with content (who wants to kill 10 billion dregs just to level up your rep and get a random unfathomable prize when you do - a mote of light and some more bloody spinmetal, worth it!), hopefully third times the charm because I'm beginning to feel like I've been bent over by Bungie for the last six months - how about a cash discount for year one people buying the DLC TTK instead of a dumb gimmick like moments of triumph.

Newsflash: all games are a waste of time. Play for fun not a virtual trophy cabinet.
-
ugh, yup. I was just starting to get to replaying vault of glass to get the weapons I never got from it. It had become obsolete with crota, but the etheric light made it worth playing again.. now it's all worthless and at least I guess we do know 6 weeks in advance. I won't waste my time any more with it. Moving on to another game. dunno if I am going to buy the expansion now. I almost quit the game with the last expansion.. but etheric light! making things worth playing again that had been obsolete before.. step in the right direction.. only to find out nope. waste of time. it's all going to be obsolete again. Pointless utterly pointless. I want to keep the guns I like. yes there should be lots of options. there should be new guns.. but I should be able to keep my old favorites and have them be relevant as well. They should be making guns that are just as relevant as the old ones. if they are going to make them all shite what's the point? I don't want to spend ten minutes taking a boss down (that turns into freaking hours) that isn't fun. a billion hit points isn't fun. strategy is fun. that's why people end up finding exploits. the exploits in and of themselves require mroe strategy than the actual blamming game. ugh.. yeah.. bungie you are screwing up. this isn't how it's done. You've got a lot of great addicting points to the game. but you can't slap the long term players in teh face like this. you have to give us a reason to play.
-
I don't know about you but I learned from Year one of Destiny the following: 1. Don't Pre-Order anything, especially if there is LOTS of HYPE 2. If the Lead writer on a project leaves the company before the game comes out, DON'T BUY IT! 3. If there is a review Embargo until the release date or after the game releases, DON'T BUY IT! 4. Bungie are not the company they were.
-
$100 is one days wage, grow up, get over it
-
Oh for the love of god just wait and see for yourself what happens or wait and let others find out for you when Taken King drops. I can understand and feel the pain but aside from canceling preorders not much we can do but wait and see. For me this is Bungie's last chance to get it right.
-
You've never played an MMO have you?
-
like I love my fatebringer and use it to death in pve but I use mostly new guns in pvp because I like to reforge and try stuff. but then they are forcefully taking away our loved guns. thats bullshit. I am not buying taken king for now until they take out all the black wax idol in their ear.
-
Year 1 is still looking like a paid early access. They're testing systems out with each DLC and seeing what sticks.
-
Sorry but no. Maybe for a way to ascend them close to the cap but not to the cap. New weapons need to feel bad ass. Weapon cycling is a standard thing in these types of games.
-
Goodness! From all the comments, it seems quite a few people are in denial. Time to logistically justify what's going on so all the sheeple don't feel cheated. Come what may, I'll have my platinum some time this week. Regardless of what Bungie does (and if I stay), I'll have something that less than 1% of players have. Screw the emblem.
-
Im not deleting my VOG weapons or gear. Fvck That. Better than any of the DLC shit. Period.
-
Can't believe people sit here and type out these long ass essays on the forums
-
Oh no! I had fun playing the game for a year but that means nothing because all that fun die with new fun now! (Overly sarcastic tone)
-
-
I'm upset that my green guns don't scale to How.
-
Well said. I've been grinding my life away here. I just started a hunter to replace my alternate Titan so I'd have one of each class. I just (and finally) got my first Monte Carlo, so I'm only missing Necro out of all the current exotic weapons. Now this? Really Bungie? I can see why Deej and Luke Smith were so evasive when it came to this topic. It sounds like they're adding quite a few nifty features to the game, but does it offset this?
-
Bungie had an idea for a new type of game. Nothing that is comparable had been done before so there were wrinkles to iron out. I for am happy with the improvements they made and as ttk info is spilling am even more anxious to play the game I love.
