They made the entire first year of this game completely pointless and a giant waste of time. You spent how many hours playing to get Legendary/Raid Weapons and Armor? You spent how many hours getting Etheric Light to ascend gear? You spent how many hours farming resource nodes in patrols? GRIND GRIND GRIND GRIND GRIND!!!
Destiny was nothing but a Grind. This is how they justified their lack of content. This is the excuse people who defended the game would use when people said the game was boring and lacked content. They needed a way to keep YOU and ME engaged with the game past the fail story missions, so what did they do? They made it a "Loot Driven Game" with RNG designed so that players WANT to spend hours and hours going back and redoing the SAME ACTIVITIES over and over and over and over again for the SOLE PURPOSE of acquiring enough Vanguard/Crucible Marks to get those Legendary Weapons and Armor from the vendors. For the SOLE PURPOSE of going through and beating the Vault of Glass and Crota's End to get that Raid Only stuff.
And why? Why did people do this? Because the vast majority believed what they were told. Believed that it wasn't a waste of time. The Dark Below was a precursor to this, and many quit the game as a result when they tried doing it then as well. It should be no surprise that people would be pissed off, because they already attempted this and everyone had the exact same reaction to it before. That's why they introduced Etheric Light in House of Wolves, and that is the main primary reason for many who decided to come back to Destiny.
But its just a huge slap to the face, though. Regardless. Because even after they give us Etheric Light, which became the center focus of HoW for the Prison of Elders? They now suddenly decide that they're going to take that away and no longer continue doing it going forward. Really? And they don't expect people to be pissed off or rather they are confused that there is such strong negativity towards all of it?
Basically, TTK is entirely a different game from what we got. The video above details this perfectly.
Year 1 just never happened. Bungie is just sweeping that shit under the rug. Which is fine, that's whatever. I agree, the first year of Destiny was a piece of garbage and should be burned and pissed on. But what about all of us morons who spent $100+ on it? What do WE get out of all that? They -blam!-ed up, they made all these mistakes and had all these problems with the game. So why do WE have to suffer for it? Why do WE get screwed over because of it? TTK would not have even been if not for us who paid into the franchise already, and yet nothing is really being done for us. We're being disrespected in the most assholish way possible by Bungie/Activision.
That Year 1 Triumphs thing isn't worth shit. An Emblem? Don't care. A black Shader and Sparrow? What good are those? Those are cosmetic items that generally ALWAYS get replaced by something else. Prime example, I have the God of War shader which I love, why would I replace that? For some vain attempt to try and garner respect from total strangers new to the game? No, that's silly.
I want continued ascension. This shouldn't even be up for debate. You put Etheric Light in and people were still grinding and getting the new weapons and armor for both Dark Below and House of Wolves DESPITE having the ability to further upgrade their old shit. SO QUITE CLEARLY PEOPLE WILL STILL USE NEW WEAPONS AND ARMOR EVEN WITH BEING ABLE TO CONTINUE ASCENDING THEIR OLD SHIT.
We ALSO see PROOF that you can in fact add to the replay value of activities by using Gear Ascension as a mechanic for such. People WILL spend hours taking on very difficult challenges to be able to do so. There is nothing at all wrong with this and it obviously gives people more shit to do in the game. How is that a BAD thing?
You can be excited for TTK all you want. The problem here is Bungie's decisions regarding Year 1 content and how they are basically eliminating any sense of true progression by not respecting the amount of time and effort invested in the game.
Fact is, YES, this DOES actually matter and YES, this IS a big deal to MANY players who WILL be quitting the game because of this and only further destroy the game's reputation along with that of Bungie who clearly don't give two shits about player feedback like they claim that they do.
You all remember this interview? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3DLTPQwB10
Fast forward to 4:27 where DeeJ talks about increasing Vault space because they acknowledge players want to be collectors and hold onto their stuff. That you can bring the Guardian you've created with you into Destiny 2 and going forward.
Hate to tell you this, Bungie, BUT THAT INCLUDES OUR GEAR AS WELL!
God -blam!-ing DAMMIT MAN! WHY DO YOU MAKE IT SO HARD FOR PEOPLE TO ENJOY THIS GAME!? SERIOUSLY! YOU ARE YOUR GREATEST OBSTACLE FOR DESTINY! You take one step forward and then two steps back. And it wasn't even YOU who announced this, instead we gotta find out from Game Informer? What the -blam!- is that all about?
You ask us for our feedback, we give it to you and then what happens? We get Weekly Updates where YOU tell US how WE feel about things. You guys are putting out a shit ton of weapons. Good for you, here's a cookie. People are going to obviously go out and get that shit REGARDLESS of still being able to continue ascending all their old shit. The POINT is that it NEEDS TO BE A CHOICE THAT PLAYERS MAKE ON THEIR OWN NOT SOMETHING THAT IS DECIDED FOR THEM!
Period.
EDIT: As anyone can see looking through these comments, its a very divided subject. However, as I have pointed out to others? Continued Gear Ascension does not, in any way, shape or form hinder TTK or prevent players from getting and using the new stuff. Players will do so either way regardless. And when I ask people "would it really bother you if Year 1 weapons and armor could still ascend?" most generally don't respond to that or actually answer with "no, it wouldn't bother them" and of course it wouldn't. It wouldn't bother ANYONE because we ALREADY WENT THROUGH IT WITH HOUSE OF WOLVES. Etheric Light was done, its real, it happened. It didn't bother anyone, it didn't hurt the game in the least and a vast majority of players reacted quite positively to it.
It won't hurt TTK. The only way it WILL hurt TTK is if you don't include it. Because people WILL leave. People WILL stop playing. You think that is silly? Screw you, that is YOUR opinion and obviously not how everyone else thinks. And THAT is the problem here, other people being arrogant and self-centered enough to think that they have a right to dictate how others should feel or think about something. That is WRONG, no matter how you look at it.
YOU MUST RESPECT HOW OTHERS FEEL. There are many who have legitimate reasons for wanting to keep ascending their old stuff. It is THEIR RIGHT to feel that way. Deal with it.
EDIT #2: For those asking, yes I have seen the IGN Interview with DeeJ. No, my opinion has not changed.
It is insulting that Bungie's response to us about this is that "those weapons will always have a place for use in VOG" which is total bullshit. No one is going to keep and use the Fatebringer in Vault of Glass when there are other weapons that will have a higher damage value. More damage will always automatically mean making less stronger weapons obsolete by comparison.
Old Legendary Weapons and Armor need to be able to continue ascending. That is how many of us feel, and that is not going to change. End of story.

I got a sneak peak at a new exotic it's called 'a waste of life and time'

Change is welcome, the game's getting stale. Old weapons have their place, raid weapons have abilities to help with their relevant raids and old weapons can still be used in pvp but will be worthless in iron banner. I wouldn't be surprised if some point in the future, maybe in destiny 2, we will actually get the ability to ascend some old weapons. I'd imagine this would be in the form of a "loyalty bonus" of some sort i.e. in game consumables (1 armour piece and 1 weapon). It would move the game forward but still reward day one players.

Well said.
-
Hey love your posts there needs to be change in the way destiny is going or it's not get past year 2
-
Edited by KICKR Snipes: 8/5/2015 8:09:28 PMExactly. We actually do not need all of the Legendary weapons in the game to be ascendable. Typical legendaries from tower vendors, strikes, and patrols do not need to be ascendable, but the end game activity legendaries NEED to be (those from Vault of Glass, Crota's End, Iron Banner, and Trials of Osiris). And honestly our unhealthy attachment to those weapons is directly related to another problem in the game: they haven't given us anything new worth replacing our old weapons with. Every time there is a new expansion they give a ton of new weapons, but they are all junk compared to what we already have! If they simply created some new good weapons - ones good enough to be on par or better than weapons we already have we would be happy to replace our old stuff. Since the launch of Vault of Glass there have only been 2 weapons created that were on par with the weapons from VoG: Black Hammer (which will totally be nerfed to junk) and The Scholar (Adept). I was happy as hell to replace my Fang of Ir Yut with an Arc The Scholar (Adept)! Sadly, nothing else they've ever introduced has been better or even close to as good as the Vault of Glass and Iron Banner weapons which have been in the game since day 1.

Video games ARE a waste of time. That's why I enjoy them. They don't help you achieve anything in life. Year 1 for me was hundreds of hours of fun with family and friends and helped me relax at the end of a long stressful day (except when crota was glitchy lol). I got my $100 worth. Looking forward to wasting some more time in year 2 :)

Big bump

-
Lol year one players were basically the beta testers including me lol That's why new players or people wise enough to wait are getting better deals than us
-
Well said. If they don't change it for TTK we should all just wait for the next expansion to see if they re-add in Ascending.
-
Not all legendary gear (weapons & armor) should be upgradable. Though I believe that raid gear should always be upgradable. I myself will be waiting several months to see if I will be buying the The Taken King. Reviews and my friends will help me decide if I buy the TTK or move on to an other game. What's the point of having stuff you like, just to start over again. Bungie said level up your way.

After taking the time to read this long and heartfelt rage-post, I've come to the conclusion that you and people like you are whiney children. Bungie did what they did and will continue to do what they do because they are the professionals. The VoG gear is just too powerful overall to be carried over the (planned) next 10 years. that's their mistake. And what do they do about it? They follow suit with the genre it is trying to portray. If you can't get past that, have fun trying to a Level 50 Oryx with you silly little 365 Fatebringer! (Though an interesting challenge it may be) (YOUTUBE THAT SHIT)

Nice video and alot of what you said i think makes sense. But try to understand that yes, this maybe the Bungie created the entire Halo franchise , this is the new Bungie, whereas most of the creative design team that created the Halo franchise are at 343 studios. But anyway, yeah, this entire year 1 experience really has been an experience. I don't know. I play destiny for what it is which is a shooter with alot of grinding to leveling up gear. I wish it had a well thought storyline to accompany the great game play but it is what it is. And what you said about taken king, yeah, definitely, I think it is the destiny game that we're suppose to get. Not the one we're currently playing.

Why does the thumb nail say $100 beta? I got this gave week 1 and have both dlcs and I only put in $80 dollars into this game. $60 for the game and $20 for the season pass

Looks like you have a split opinion on this one buddy. I for one welcome the change for new year one weapons. Only because Bungie absolutely messed up the weapon balance on year one. First auto rifle nerfs. Then multiple weapon rebalances and buffs, nerfs.. Just got worse every time they tried to fix it. So new weapons for year two. Firstly, I HOPE they have learned how to properly make balanced weapons work for year two. They have had a year to master it now!! Secondly they need to carefully measure the power of the new percs as some year one perks made weapons OP. Thirdly, I hope they have made ALOT more guns and exotics for year two. To make up for the loss of the year one weapons. I have heard they have made a heavy RAIL gun exotic!! That's what I'm talking about!!! Haha But I really do feel your pain about the time spent getting some of the old weapons and see your point of view. I really really hope that Bungie doesn't allow all guns to be ascended at the end of year two though. Cause by then most of us would have deleted a lot of old weapons!!

Edited by smahbleh: 8/5/2015 8:08:14 PMHi there again, Malphisto! Here's the problem I have and I'll put it as concise as possible. Year 1 content was predominantly disc locked content. Data mining proves that. There's no way to access what megaman found without a foundation for these things already being in place. Then Bungie showed they're capable of changing that content as they did with HOW - at least it showed with this expansion much more. Many of the changes going into TTK are things the player base and community have been asking for since TDB. It simply shouldn't take this long to fix a game that was coded and developed by these guys. And when they did fix something, they broke nine other things. I get this is all supposed to be a process but if any of us had a job and were given a project, and it took us 9 months to figure out how we -blam!-ed up our own project, we'd be fired and jobless. __________________________________________________ I think TTK saves or murders destiny. I genuinely don't know what to expect. Bungie likes to hype things up and then hype it again and then hype it one last time. All while sharing minimal details. That article from planet destiny has told me more about the DLC than anything Bungie has published. To me - THATS A PROBLEM. Maybe, just maybe the last year was filled with so many mistakes because all he real brains behind the game were working on TTK the whole time - which would be AWESOME. I obviously want this game to succeed, I've played it too much to want anything else. Bungie has just left a poop taste in my mouth that all the listerine in the world can't remove. Both of these are quotes from a conversation I just had with a few buddies of mine I've been playing with since Day One.
-
Why would you want acension in TTK I didn't like it in HoW because it forced me to use the old very powerful weapons and the new weapons just aren't powerful enough to compete because we had these weapons especially fatebringer. I could be having more fun with a 365 Jewel of Osiris than a 300 fatebringer. Guns are supposed to be left behind for the new weapons to be used. My answer Bungie is doing the right thing.
-
I seem to remember a 'play your way' being attached to this game at one time. the implication being that you could choose almost everything about your character. not what happened. it would be awesome to me to show up in year eight or nine with vanillla gear that is still relevant and have the noobs wondering what it is and how they can get one and then tell them 'you missed out.' this isn't to say that the new gear should suck so that I can be elitist, I just want the option to bring old gear into the new levels. after all, the weapons of the past don't kill any less than new ones. how many games set in modern times use old guns? even the Uzi in like fifty years old and what shooter would be complete without it even if newer weapons that do a similar job exist! ultimately this game wants me to shoe horn my size 44 expectation into a kiddie size 25 reality. definitely not the game I was hoping for and I don't see myself buying TTK anytime soon.
-
It's called progression. You want to use the same gear from year one for 10 years? You sound like this game is your job.
