This was a serious conversation at my job today. My boss says that since there is no gravity in space the force would just push the punched and the puncher away from each other with no damage taking place. I say the force will be lessened but it will still cause damage.
Thoughts?
Edit: this thread now stands as a monument to my bosses lack of physics knowledge and my lack of confidence in my knowledge of physics.

I guess you could say he got punched in the.... (Puts on sunglasses) Space Balls
YEAHHHHHHHH
-
My boss says that since there is no gravity in space
Well he's already wrong here...
-
OF COURSE IT WOULD
-
Sounds like we better get this question up to the peeps in the ISS. Get on it, science!

You should dick punch your boss. In the face.
-
Probably
-
In space Nobody can hear you physics
-
Yes. There's no air resistance to push against a swinging fist, or gravity to keep you where you are, so upon impact, you would float away in opposite directions.
-
Aren't porn stars going to space to make the first ever space porn? I'm sure they can test that out post-production for us
-
You'd implode first
-
Edited by Kalameet: 8/4/2015 2:50:06 PMYour boss has no concept of physics. The force of the impact would be equal to that on earth, it's just that there's no other forces to cancel out the reactionary force, pushing you two away from each other.
-
Your boss is wrong, it hurts, gravity has nothing to do with it
-
Your boss doesn't sound like a very bright fella.
-
In space? If you mean in shuttle, then yes, It will hurt just as bad, your not in water, so your fist can still lash out at high speed (also the sensitive part is not the dick... -.-) Gravity does not cause the problem on earth, it is friction (which gravity helps enforce) that give you the extra momentum b pushing off the floor to maintain your forward momentum with your fist without the force pushing you back. (If our surrounded by air, or have small arms but some body weight, it is not going to matter when your in space, will hurt just as much)
-
I'm pretty sure getting punched in the dick, no matter where, will probably still hurt.
-
It would because (1) there is gravity in space, (2) his balls and some person's fist are both inelastic, and (3) the impulse generated by the mass of his balls.
-
It would hurt but not as much
-
It would hurt
-
It would hurt whoever go puched' space balls.
-
If you were able to get to each other without floating away you're lucky. But when you manage to get to each other you are probably holding on to each other, if you weren't you wouldn't even be able to land a punch. So you are holding on to them and then punch them which would still hurt even after you let go of them because it would be like being instantly hit with a force and it then pushes you back.
-
Equal and opposite reaction. The same force would apply to the puncher as the punched but because of the nerve distribution it would hurt the punched more. There is also much to be said about momentum and how the puncher will have some of his equal force applied to the stopping of the fist. Your boss needs to read up on simple laws of physics.
-
Still hurt
-
You should be checked into a mental hospital...
-
I think it would hurt less but still hurt that would be medical opinion
