Dear Dames of Destiny,
While I do not normally watch the Destiny Bungie Bounty streams, it recently came to my attention through the My name is Byf video (which I have included in this post for anyone who happens to be curious), that your part in the Bungie Bounty was met with almost constant sexist and discriminatory remarks. Normally, I don't make threads of my own, only reserving that sort of thing for what I consider important, and this is the third thread I've made on the Bungie forums, period.
As such, I feel a few things need to be said.
First, to the Destiny Community:
It comes as no surprise to me that there is still a hateful attitude towards women in gaming, but what did come as a shock was the fact that people were willing to show that hate and discrimination so publicly, without any apparent shame for it. I realize that the Internet and Online Gaming, in and of themselves, promote anonymity, and in turn that gives people the power to say whatever it is they wish. That power is often coupled with complete irresponsibility and total unaccountability.
That is no excuse, and is unacceptable.
The fact that I have to type this in the first place disappoints and sickens me, but I suppose it has to be reiterated: In a video game, the gender of the player does not matter. It should never matter. Neither should race or place of birth. Discrimination as a whole is wrong, and should never be promoted. As such, anyone who sees what happened to the Dames of Destiny, and approves? You are not a part of my Destiny Community, and I want nothing to do with you. If I seem like I'm parroting Byf's video and the points he happens to be making, it's simply because the point deserves to be hammered home.
Second, to the Dames of Destiny themselves:
For those of you who read this, and I sincerely hope you do, I want to say on behalf of my part of the Destiny Community that I am truly sorry that you had to see, experience, and have to endure that kind of utter bullshit. And I am sorry that over the past decade, it hasn't seemed to have gotten noticeably better.
I hope that from this point forward, you have to deal with less and less discriminating assholes while you play online, regardless of whether or not it happens to be Destiny. And I hope that, despite everything that happened during the Bungie Bounty stream, it does not deter you from staying strong as a part of this community.
Sincerely,
Texas Joker 52, esq.

Edited by BL4DE RUNNER UK: 7/30/2015 9:09:25 PMThe guy in the video does not speak for all the community. Him saying these people are 'cast out' or 'ostracised' thats not up to him. I don't like Racism, Sexism, all the isms', homophobia the list goes on. But here's the thing; Hating someone because of their views, no matter how abhorrent you find those views, Is exactly the same as being racist. Your hating a group of people because of the way they conduct themselves. YOU don't like what they say. It's not up to YOU to police the internet. I agree that those people were probably dicks, it doesn't make them sexist in particular. Maybe some were young teens; They don't yet know the impact of words. Maybe some were uneducated, again not seeing how it could hurt Dames of Destiny. I don't know, What i do know is life is not black and white. It's shades of grey and full of perceptions and interpretations. I acknowledge they are dicks for what they did. People like that i don't tend to have in my social circle, virtual or physical. These people will learn that it's not acceptable as they grow and mature through life. If they don't, So what? We don't have a perfect, clinical, sterile world. Finally, coming out and defending Dames of Destiny? Good job! Charge in to the rescue of those fragile, delicate females. How sexist is that i wonder?

I agree there is no rational reason why childish behavior needs to be tolerated. For the people saying that they should expect it because mostly males play Destiny seriously? I mean seriously?
-
Bump I'm 14 and probably know how to show more respect and maturity than some of these disrespectful cyberbullies.
-
Dude, get off your high horse, who gives a shit. You want to make a difference, teach your kids right from wrong.
-
well said
-
Bump.
-
-
Imma repost this. You are amazing.
-
Op is definitely a -blam!- boy, no doubt
-
You. I like you.
-
Well said, it's sad that stuff like that is one of the reasons they started the dames of destiny in the first place.
-
All I have to say is a person is smart but people are dumb....think about it
-
Bunch of betas in here
-
Dude people are low... I support all players and the dames. #Dames #Equality
-
:) thank you

o. This is not how an apology works. The things that were said to these ladies may have been bad, but by no means does that mean you can speak or apologize for all of us, which implies guilt on the part of people that weren't even involved to begin with. Second of all, how has sexism in the gaming community gotten worse? It's still a bit of an issue, sure. If anything women are given more say in our communities lately. The people that make sexist remarks towards women are few and far between and if these forums are any indication, we hate them just as much as you do. Neither you, nor me, nor anyone innocent in this exchange needs to apologize because it doesn't change anything. So what good does it do? What we need to do is continie being great people to everyobe that deserves it, regardless of gender, orientation, race or other such identifiers. And women can help too, by taking these criticisms the same way men have ever since geek culture became a thing.
-
Jesus Christ. Seriously? Why for -blam!-'s sake do you need to apologize? Go try and be an attention whore somewhere else.
-
These people hate everyone, not just women. Lets address the real issue.
-
It 2015 everyone needs to grow up and realize that there are girl gamer that really enjoy gaming and font only play COD and whatever other game to look cool, man, one if my best friends, she can beat me at almost any game I play. Even someone in co-op oriented games that aren't meant for you to best the other players, she somehow still manages to pull something off
-
It's not guys hating on the girls. It's guys hating on everyone
-
I agree with you we are all gamers here and should respect one another. I did not watch the stream but I would be pretty nervous going against the Dames because 1.) bungie posted a bounty for them so I would think they would be exceptionally good. 2.) any group willing to do this must have enormous courage. Again I am not fully aware of the situation but we should not be being sexist or anything like that to a fellow gamer! We should be respectful to each other!

This community gives people with cancer, cancer
-
Bump.
-
Shhhh hush
-
Welcome to the internet Mr. White Knight.... The internet is freed from common decency and social expectations... Your post won't change the minds of the shit heads. And the ones that are decent online will agree but don't need the topic shoved down their throat. Just be yourself and flip off the pricks that need to compensate

I think anyone who made a remark should be banned from PS/Xbox.
