Mandatory voting is not a good idea because you will have an excess of uneducated voters and therefore the government will suffer.

That was originally the thought I had, but the research I have seen on the practice actually has the opposite effect, the populace surprisingly becomes more informed since they have to take an interest. There would also be an abstain function, just in case.
