Just found out about this the other day and I gotta say, this is a VERY cool little secret about Fallout's mascot, the Vault Boy. So you know that very famous picture of him giving the "thumbs up"? The image I have linked above. Well apparently, he's not even giving you the thumbs up. He's testing to see if he's at a safe distance from the nukes! Allow me to explain, if you hold up your thumb at a nuclear mushroom cloud, and your entire thumb covers it up, you're at a safe distance from the explosion. So he's not winking, and he's not giving you the thumbs up. He's closing one eye to focus on his thumb to see if he's safe. That's such an awesome, hidden, and unexplained thing about him. That's Bethesda for ya! Always sneaking in little secrets in their stuff and you'll only know it's true meaning if you know about it. Anyone else already know this? I feel like this is one of those widely unknown things
