I was the same way bud. Played nearly 1000hrs over 4 characters (yes I too leveled one and deleted it) and finally got my first Hawkmoon from a round in PvP a month ago. I got another a week later in a nightfall.

the weighted RNG is lifted once you get a weapon the first time. That's why you start seeing weapons drop more and more after you get it the first time.
