Match makIng would lead players to experience crappy end game activities. Thus making them unlikely returning to raid activities. Forcing you to actively search out a group forces at least some buy in and makes for a far better experience.

When you go out and search for a group you are essentially doing the matchmaking for yourself, other than asking for specific weapons and lvls what makes it different from matchmaking in any other activity in this game?

Yes. That forces a level of buy in. I have played nearly every day since launch and I have was never once in a group that excluded anyone for anything besides level. I agree Destiny needs some form of it. But not match makIng like it used in PvP or strike. There needs to be buy in.
