Its not heritage, it's propaganda and someone needs to set you all straight. God knows you can't rely on Vignettes from the CBC for your (properly) proud history. Having spent considerable time in Canada, the licence you all have to be anti-American is quite disturbing - and often based on BS.
Funnily enough, the one thing our people share is the inability to be told were wrong or, that another valid position exists.
Firstly, I appreciate you actually reading the article. If you study military history you would know that Britain didn't rely on Canadian militias much for the North American War or European wars. Not much more than garrision duty, actually. There were no Canadian regulars, per se, and you have to appreciate that Canada's population in 1810 was a majority French. Given the 'real' war was with France and France and the US were allied, Canadians, if we call them that, had suspect loyalties the British would never rely on.
Secondly, there was no 'invasion'. Despite what you're told and where some battles took place, the war (the actual war by Congress and not state militias (aka yucks)), was to remove British presence, impressment and trade strangling. The US won on all counts.
Canada won on all counts too, it became a nation (state) because of that war.
