You obtain the strangers rifle at the end of the vanilla game. What is the very next activity you looked to undertake in the vanilla game? VoG.
Apparently there is still a chest in the VoG which nobody has found. You get the gun right before you would take on the raid. Whilst it wouldn't be great it wouldn't be as useless in the VoG as it would be in trials. The gun's description tells us that it is not from our time. The Vault exists outside of time. Atheon is time's Conflux. The stranger herself is a time traveller. The Vex are time travellers.
Whilst I don't think it's either of these I would consider the strangers rifle far more likely to be linked to the alleged mystery chest in the VoG than the Trials of Osiris.

You start the mission for No Time To Explain from the Vault, that's the 'other chest', at the end you open it to find a dead ghost and give to FWC Lady Exo
