The Darkness Within - Chapter 1 - Bounty Hunter - Part 2

Chapter 1 - Part 1 Day 1, 10:37, Venus I knew it would take the Fallen a few seconds to initiate offensive maneuvers against me. I had to make sure to use those seconds to my advantage. Before I could even start to worry about the Fallen who would soon pour out of the ketch, I had to put something between myself and the ketches turrets. Even with shielded armor I would not be able to survive a direct hit. I jumped to my feet and kept the underside of the ketch in my sights. I moved backwards, slowly, keeping the rifle steady, checking my rear every few steps, until I arrived at a big machine that looked like an old air-conditioner unit. I turned around and took cover behind it. My biggest advantage was still the element of surprise, but that would wear off soon. No doubt the enemy was already preparing to make their move. I could not afford to rest here much longer. I tried to pull up my orbital communication link, but it was no use. “The Fallen have jammed the signal.” It was the voice of Ibuki, my Ghost. “I'm afraid you can not transmat your sparrow right now.” With a quick curse I shut down the device and looked around the corner to check on the ketch. I was lucky to see the turret moving in my direction, so I could back off behind the air-conditioner before the explosion ripped a big part out of the machine and sent debris flying everywhere. The roof shook under such heavy fire. I didn't know how much longer I could allow myself to stay here, but the reality was, I was trapped. I could hear the Fallen being deployed on the roof, just a few dozen meters away from my position. The turret had stopped firing for now, maybe in order to catch me alive, maybe to allow for safe deployment. If I ran away in the opposite direction, the turret would shred me before I could reach the next building, if I ran back to the ketch I would have to deal with whatever Fallen had joined the scene a moment ago. The roof opposite the street was too high for me to make my escape unscathed. There was only one way out. I looked over to the ledge, raised my auto-rifle to get a better look through the scope and let it sink again with a sigh. I took off my helmet and discarded it. I needed to feel the air around me. “You are insane,” Ibuki said. I readied myself, physically and mentally. “Maybe,” I replied, “But that's why I'm still alive.” With these words I dashed out of cover and made my way across the roof. I could hear Fallen infantry and the heavy impacts of turret fire behind me. The roof started shaking again and I could feel the heat, but I kept going to reach the edge of the roof. I made it before any of them could hit me. The moment I reached the edge I took a leap and jumped off the roof at full speed. I could feel the wind rushing through my hair, I could feel it against my skin, my lips. My heart was pounding. Yes, I was alive. The building on the other side came closer quickly, but not as quick as the solid ground below me. The captain's group was still roaming and probably got a pretty good look at me then. I concentrated the energy of the light within me, I imagined myself not where I was, but where I wanted to be. I reached out to draw the hidden powers of the universe to be used at my disposal. I pulled myself forward. With a sudden burst I blinked across the street and crashed through a window on the second or third floor of the building opposite from the one I jumped from. Using space time to my advantage left a prickly sensation running down my body, but I did not have time to be distracted by such thoughts. I quickly scanned the room for exits, obstacles and possible enemies. It was empty. I turned around and stood by the window I had just crashed through. I leaned outside and fired a few salves as distraction. A Vandal was directly in my sights so I took him out before I continued to spray the street with bullets. I managed to get the Fallen on the ground to back off and retreat to cover. A Dreg peeked up behind the remains of a wall, but a short burst scared him easily. I checked for Shanks, but I could not see any. The sound of gunfire and the zipping of projectiles took me by surprise. I took a quick step back. “That angle...” was the only thought I managed before I checked the roof of the building I escaped from a moment ago. The deployed Fallen had made their way across the roof and were firing at my position from above. In the second that I got a glimpse of them I could see at least two Captains, a small number of Vandals and a Servitor. I retreated back into the room. It seemed like I traded one trap for another, but this time I had the right gadgets at hand. I pulled out a grenade. “That Servitor might be the one jamming the signal.” Chapter 1 - Part 3
