After reading some of the recent chatter online about players losing their characters I had a thought… a thought which may just save someone's hard earned gear and loot…
Many people believe that player generated data is stored solely on the console. They're wrong. Destiny stores player data in an online database triggered by a series of signals controlled by the player.
Generally these signals are directed from the player through the controller and into wireless signals. However, using modern technology, we the player have remote access to Destiny's online database directly from our smartphones if we have the 'Destiny' app. This app overrides the need for a direct connect to PSN or Xbox servers, which is were players generally access online games. Instead we have access to this database in a simpler form.
With the app we access vaults and characters. Here we can equip, un-equip, transfer, lock, and view all of our 'items.' Doing so means that others can just as easily enter a player database remotely by 'hacking' a persons account. These people can complete wipe a stored account.
But, there may be a solution to that. Bungie can store a persons account information, server location, IP address, product purchases and progression. With all this information they can recreate or possibly even recover a persons deleted characters and items.
By simply creating a separate database characters can be stored until login and re-uploaded when logged off. If this is done in cooperation with Destiny's current active storage feature in which it tracks on-going progress and stores it in case of a technical or mechanical problem players will have a virtually seamless database in which they could trust their characters.
In the worst case scenario there is still a solution. Bungie can store a persons account information, server location, IP address, product purchases and progression. With all this information they can recreate or possibly even recover a persons deleted characters and items.
Although these theories may seem ludicrous it is possible. With a form of verification bungie can be given access to use a players information and do the things I have discussed above.
My name is Chance M. Delaney and these are my thoughts on account hacks and security failures. It is my belief that players should not be held responsible for the illegal access of their account by an unknown source.
