There will be backwards compatibility soon for Xbox one. Also your characters transfer over. I definitely recommend going Xbox one. They're updating soon to make the systems run faster too.

you dont need to wait for backwards compatability, all of Destiny is online so as long as he uses the same Xbox Live profile itll transfer.
