Looking to upgrade my console, tell me what I should get and why

Hey everyone, I really appreciate all of the feedback! It was great to hear a lot of real opinions, suggestions, and information about both systems. It was a lot of reading last night / this morning to catch up on everything, but I feel WAY more informed than before.
I made this post to get some information to help me make a good decision on a new console and I think with all of your help it did. Didn't make this to troll/start a huge debate on here, but I guess it comes with the territory on a forum where people are passionate about their gaming systems.
[b]I made a random decision yesterday and pre-ordered the TTK PS4. I have enough store credit from previous trade ins at GameStop to make it affordable. Also will be trading in my 360 for an additional $100 off. So it looks like I will be starting from scratch, but I have enough friends on the PS+ network to make it fun.[/b]
Again, I really appreciate all of the feedback/suggestions/opinions from you guys. It was a great read and I think I learned all I needed to make the right decision for myself.
Also, thanks for all of the congratulations on me becoming a dad. Although I am still about 6 months out from having that new little one in my arms, I couldn't be more excited about it.

I've had a Xbox 360 for a few years now and most of my friends either have a Xbox One or a PS4 (it's about a 50/50 split). I recently found out that I am going to be a dad (due late January 2016) and because of this and all of the future late nights that come with that in my future, I got permission from the wife to upgrade, so help me figure out what to get.
Since I am already a Microsoft user, obviously going with the Xbox One seems like the easiest one to upgrade to, but I'm open to suggestions.
For the Xbox, I am already familiar with the Xbox Live stuff and I'm already paying the yearly online fee, no need to cancel service etc.
If I upgrade to the Xbox One, do I need to start over with new characters or would my character carry over?
Is the Xbox One backwards compatible with my current 360 games (Destiny, Halo Series, GTA5) or do I have to buy new games no matter what?
Any other benefits to sticking with Microsoft?
As for the PS4, I don't have too much knowledge about this system. I've heard it's got better graphics, but I've also heard the online servers are unreliable leaving you unable to play often? Is it worth it? What other reasons make it worth switching?

I would stick to xbone. Your characters do transfer and this fall you will be able to play with any friends that still use the 360, along with reverse compatibility. (I am biased because I only have the xbone, so keep that in mind.)

3 RepliesXbox has a slightly more stable network but Sony currently has the best upcoming schedule and alot of timed exclusives in major LPs. Destiny, plus they just signed a deal with Activision for the COD franchise supplanting the Xbox as the preferred fps counsel.

You've pretty much answered your question. Stick with Xbox. It's simply the better choice for you. I have both but prefer the PS4 over Xbone. I have friends that are the other way around prefer their Xbone over PS4. Your characters will transfer from 360 to Xbone but not to the PS4. You don't have to get a PSN account. There's going to be backwards compatibility this Xmas. The choice is yours and don't look back. Good luck!!!

Xbox backwards compatibility only works for games that the publishers clear with microsoft. We wont see this feature really working for at least a year imo. Right now you can only use backwards compatibility with certain games, all of which are pretty lame, the coolest one is probably mass effect. But i strongly suggest upgrading to Xbox One because you are familiar with them have an account you have worked on (gamerscore) and imo they have better games which is really what it comes down to. If the games as fun the graphics shouldnt matter, why do you think i still play supersmash brothers

The new dashboard and such takes some getting use to but is really nice once you get the hang of navigating it. The xbone also doubles as a media hub so you can your tv right up through it. I love watching tv on my xbox as the voice commands are very nice all I have to do is say "xbox sportsnet west" and it will pop up. I'm not to experienced of a Sony player but that console has it's up too it to. Graphically it's supposed to be a bit better but other then that both systems are straight across the board for storage, ram and all the techy kinda stuff. You also mention In your post about the ps servers, they aren't as bad as everyone makes them out to be but microsofts online services are no doubt better. If u switch to xb1 ur characters do switch over but u would need to buy a new game because u cant play 360 games on xb1... Yet. U dont need to pay for dlc again u can just download it om xb1 for free.

Xbox One because of the games, plus we are starting to get two free games a month now. We got Assassin's Creed Black Flag this month so I can only predict that from bow on we will get at least one free AAA title a month. I feel like next month we could be getting Forza 5, Thief, or other early games that came out.

Normally I would just say go ps4 cuz I'm more a fan of play station than Xbox, but you made a good point. Characters and stuff carrying over, achievements (if you care about that stuff) and you already have a subscription for Xbox live so it's a better bet to go Xbox one id say.

Get whatever console you have more friends to play with on. Both systems are good and almost on par with each other. They both have their own exclusives and both have different timed exclusives. I have both systems (well 3 since I have a Wii U also) and notice very little difference. I play more on the PS4 and own more there because that is where all my friends play.

Best way to decide is the games u want. That being said if u are gunna play destiny for another year ps4 has exclusive contents. I liked my Xbox one but sold it cos played my ps4 more

2 RepliesOh and Grats on the daddy status..welcome to the club. On a serious, I had the same issue, had a xb360 and wanted to upgrade. I decided on the one only because it felt like a natural move. I already had live for the year, and a few 3 month cards. As for games, no you can't play the 360 on the xbox...well officially you can't but there are ways to do it. You also need to buy a new second controller and if you had a recharger, that needs to be replaced. So yea, your getting all new stuff, but your xbox live will work for both. Plus some games you buy can be used for both (get a 360 version and it has a code for xbox1 as well) I let the kids play with the 360 now, and it was the Star wars edition, so didn't want to give it up. GL on your decision.

They're both as good as the other taking into consideration all the pros and cons, so I'd go with xb1 if u already have a 360. U just have to eat for your characters to transfer the the 1 from 360.

Get Xbox one, you don't have to make new characters, all your characters carry through your gamertag.

If you are going to be a dad you won't have time to grind out all new gear and weapons.. Stick with Xbox man..

4 RepliesXbox One, your characters will transfer, it is going to be backwards compatible, the live doesn't just stop working for extended periods of time, it has gears of war, halo and fable which are very fun exclusives, and it is just better.

6 RepliesI have an 18th month old so first off congratulations it's amazing especially when they start walking and can show you affection. Anyway about the console choice I have both and I personally like the ps4 better. The main reason for this is I was so beyond excited for the xbox one, but the 360 is just better right now except for graphics and it's not a huge difference. I came from an xbox 360 and upgraded to a xbox one then got a ps4. I love ps4. The UI is simply and amazing. It was cool to play games I hadn't played before like the last of us which that game alone is worth buying a ps4. Also destiny and cod switched to ps4 which played a part. But if you have alot of friends on xbox then I'd stay there. Friends can make or break a gaming experience. My friends all switched to the ps4 when I did. Xbox one will get better and they have a UI update coming soon so really you won't go too wrong either way except the one doesn't feel like an upgrade atm.

I dont know where you heard the pos 4's graphics are better but if they are then barely but i know for a fact xbox has noticeable better frame rate and yes your characters, gamer score, friends, and achievements carry over
