Hey everyone, I really appreciate all of the feedback! It was great to hear a lot of real opinions, suggestions, and information about both systems. It was a lot of reading last night / this morning to catch up on everything, but I feel WAY more informed than before.
I made this post to get some information to help me make a good decision on a new console and I think with all of your help it did. Didn't make this to troll/start a huge debate on here, but I guess it comes with the territory on a forum where people are passionate about their gaming systems.
I made a random decision yesterday and pre-ordered the TTK PS4. I have enough store credit from previous trade ins at GameStop to make it affordable. Also will be trading in my 360 for an additional $100 off. So it looks like I will be starting from scratch, but I have enough friends on the PS+ network to make it fun.
Again, I really appreciate all of the feedback/suggestions/opinions from you guys. It was a great read and I think I learned all I needed to make the right decision for myself.
Also, thanks for all of the congratulations on me becoming a dad. Although I am still about 6 months out from having that new little one in my arms, I couldn't be more excited about it.
Thanks again, guardians.

I've had a Xbox 360 for a few years now and most of my friends either have a Xbox One or a PS4 (it's about a 50/50 split). I recently found out that I am going to be a dad (due late January 2016) and because of this and all of the future late nights that come with that in my future, I got permission from the wife to upgrade, so help me figure out what to get.
Since I am already a Microsoft user, obviously going with the Xbox One seems like the easiest one to upgrade to, but I'm open to suggestions.
For the Xbox, I am already familiar with the Xbox Live stuff and I'm already paying the yearly online fee, no need to cancel service etc.
If I upgrade to the Xbox One, do I need to start over with new characters or would my character carry over?
Is the Xbox One backwards compatible with my current 360 games (Destiny, Halo Series, GTA5) or do I have to buy new games no matter what?
Any other benefits to sticking with Microsoft?
As for the PS4, I don't have too much knowledge about this system. I've heard it's got better graphics, but I've also heard the online servers are unreliable leaving you unable to play often? Is it worth it? What other reasons make it worth switching?

Buy the one you have the most friends to play with on.
-
I hate to say it but Xbox is getting worse and worse. We've lost Call of Duty, Destiny is still PS4 exclusive, and the Xbox One has still been shit since launch day.
-
Go xbox one, its easier to go to forums and add/join people to groups, I hear it takes adding ppl as friends and lotta red tape to add them to your game. xbox has dedicated servers and xbox hasn't been hacked in the past like sony has.
-
I would go to ps4 Sony I had a x box and xbox 360 Then I got a ps3 like the set up Got the ps4 love it Played my friends Xbox one and did not like the hole windows 8 look style they did You will have more vote Xbox on here due to more halo fans is only x box But I would get the ps4 in trust Sony a bit more lol No red rings of death
-
i dont understand how xbox one always wins thes things ive played both consoles and im telling you the ps4 beats the xbone in so many ways its funny ps4 is just such a better system but its your choice
-
Don't listen to xbox halo isn't all its cracked up to be anymore. Also if you're getting it for Destiny I would recommend the new taken king ps4 console bundle. Also the ps4 is getting more exclusives for Destiny
-
Get Xbox One, all progress, your profile and achievements will carry over.
-
Pretty much everything gets transferred over. I know for a fact that your Destiny stats transfer to the X1
-
GET THE PS4 destiny taken King edition!!! I'm About to sell my ps4 to get that beautiful piece.
-
If you like the friends on Xbox one more than ps4 than go Xbox one but if the ps4 friends are better than ps4. You will keep everything with your characters on Xbox if you stay or you grind everything back to were you were to go to ps. Sadly you would have to buy all the games back but it's your decision.
-
If you get Xbox One, your characters and progress will carry over. Backwards compatibility will be available starting at some point in December and I'm assuming a few of your games will be available right off the bat, but I'm not sure. If you get Playstation 4, it is a better console and you'll get exclusives but you'll have to start over. It's your call
-
PS EXCLUSIVES
-
You should seriously consider ps4 just for The Last of Us. If you mainly play destiny it's also ps4, cause of the exclusives if that matters to you. Thing is, if I was in yours shoes I would have gotten the xb1, only reason I have a ps4 is because I had a psx, ps2 and ps3, and never came in contact with an Xbox. It's so easy to just stick with what you know. And I hear the controller is slightly better on xb1 as well, much better interface etc.
-
Honestly surprised the one is winning. And that's what I voted for because I absolutely love mine. If you DO get the Xbox one BUY THE KINECT it helps menu navigation so much and you can do awesome voice controls and stuff I love it and would never buy the one without it. The fact that they sell it without it is stupid. I plan on getting a p.s.4 eventually though. Both are solid consoles. IN the end, look at what games are out and are in the near future and make your decision based off of that.

Only reason I got a PS4 is becuase most of my Mates got one, but - PS4 has better Graphics and better exclusive games (Last of Us, Uncharted) as well as Activision partnership with Sony means better content for Destiny as well as CoD. But PS4 has unreliable servers compared to Xbox. -Xbox has better Hardware, better features and accessories, better servers, runs more smoothly, and overall puts out an image that looks better than playstation. I guess its up to you
-
For you I say Xbox One because you're more familiar with it. But if you like anime games most of them come out on playstation. I chose ps4 because I like playstation more. But that's just me.
i had both of the old gen( ps2/3 Xbox/360)
-
Backwards compatibility will work on any of your 360 games, they're gonna run an update which will allow most of the popular games to run and they will do more as they go on
-
The biggest advantage to Xbox is that you don't have to start all over. Your characters and all their gear would remain intact.
-
I have both systems. I prefer the ps4, but I still like the Xbox. I hate the Xbox interface though, the tiles are annoying and I can never find what I want. That's a big part of why I like the PS more. I find the community on PS is a bit more relaxed as well. Both systems have annoying players, but I seem to find less of the angry people who scream and rant. That said, the important thing is more where your friends are and which system has the games you want to play. The systems are pretty comparable so it comes down to which has the exclusives you prefer. I would also say that FPS games tend to be better on Xbox and more RPG style games are better on PS. Part of that is community and part due to what console tends to be lead developer for those games. in the end, if you are happy on Xbox, might as well stick with it. If you think you might prefer some of the PS exclusives, switch. Either way you get a good console.

No backwards compatability now unfortunately, but when windows 10 comes out they are gonna try to make it backword compatible via software update

Edited by astral: 7/9/2015 9:42:20 PMFirst if you have friends that actively play Destiny..well 50/50 crap. Second try each controller at a game store or retailer to see which you would like Third which one has exclusive games you want in the future? My story on this issue: I bought a PS4 day one from amazon and there was no games I want after a while so I sold it for an Xbox One. Enjoyed it for exclusives and the occasional game with a friend online. Slowly I got bored and Destiny was releasing so I rebought a PS4 with Destiny. Now after about 6-9 months having both and the exclusives coming for both I cannot just have one or the other. The question about graphics both can get to 1080p but only ports for both can get to 1080p 60fps. If your a graphics whore you'd have a gaming PC already anyways. But with all that said games on PS4 will look a decent bit better. Destiny is 1080p 30fps on both Ps4 and Xbox One if you don't know Yes only Destiny characters transferred from x360 to x1 ps3 to ps4. Backwards compatibility is cool but don't expect most games you'd want to play for a year or 2 if ever. PSN vs Xbox Live. I've used both for years and pay for PS+ since I play Destiny on PS4. Yes PSN has been hacked more recently but other than that they are both about the same for online play now. Even when PSN was "down" last few times I was already playing Destiny and saw 0 interruptions to kick me off even when Friends and PlayStation Store was broke in the console.

Which ever one most of your mates play.
-
If you don't want to start over, go Xbox. If you are okay starting fresh PS4 is an option. I'd recommend the system your friends play on, because that's a lot more important than marginally better hardware.
-
I've an xbone and I'd go that way, just to carry your progress over and friends. The backwards compatability is a bit of a strange one, I've 6 friends who went to xbone from 360 and except for one LAN night, I've never played it since. And I got mine day one.
-
Xbox One. You're already on MS and you would have to start all over. Backwards compatibility is coming out soon as well.
-
Buy both. Problem Solved.
