Looking to upgrade my console, tell me what I should get and why

Hey everyone, I really appreciate all of the feedback! It was great to hear a lot of real opinions, suggestions, and information about both systems. It was a lot of reading last night / this morning to catch up on everything, but I feel WAY more informed than before.
I made this post to get some information to help me make a good decision on a new console and I think with all of your help it did. Didn't make this to troll/start a huge debate on here, but I guess it comes with the territory on a forum where people are passionate about their gaming systems.
[b]I made a random decision yesterday and pre-ordered the TTK PS4. I have enough store credit from previous trade ins at GameStop to make it affordable. Also will be trading in my 360 for an additional $100 off. So it looks like I will be starting from scratch, but I have enough friends on the PS+ network to make it fun.[/b]
Again, I really appreciate all of the feedback/suggestions/opinions from you guys. It was a great read and I think I learned all I needed to make the right decision for myself.
Also, thanks for all of the congratulations on me becoming a dad. Although I am still about 6 months out from having that new little one in my arms, I couldn't be more excited about it.

I've had a Xbox 360 for a few years now and most of my friends either have a Xbox One or a PS4 (it's about a 50/50 split). I recently found out that I am going to be a dad (due late January 2016) and because of this and all of the future late nights that come with that in my future, I got permission from the wife to upgrade, so help me figure out what to get.
Since I am already a Microsoft user, obviously going with the Xbox One seems like the easiest one to upgrade to, but I'm open to suggestions.
For the Xbox, I am already familiar with the Xbox Live stuff and I'm already paying the yearly online fee, no need to cancel service etc.
If I upgrade to the Xbox One, do I need to start over with new characters or would my character carry over?
Is the Xbox One backwards compatible with my current 360 games (Destiny, Halo Series, GTA5) or do I have to buy new games no matter what?
Any other benefits to sticking with Microsoft?
As for the PS4, I don't have too much knowledge about this system. I've heard it's got better graphics, but I've also heard the online servers are unreliable leaving you unable to play often? Is it worth it? What other reasons make it worth switching?

Get a ps4 if you want a faster console that actually works. Get a Xbox one if you want a network that works.

With would personally go with the console i know my friends play and have. For me its the Xbox. Where i live only a handful of people are playstation people. It's mostly Xbox here in my little town

My opinion ps4.. I will soon and always will be a loyal ps gamer. Without the hate for xbox and xbox users. Everybody has favourite consoles

2 RepliesXbox One can play 360 games. M$ already confirmed this. As for the controller, I prefer the Xbox One. Why? I can easily replace a pair of AA battery in less than 5 sec. Not having to wait for charging like my PS4. A PS4 battery last like 4 or 5 hours while a Xbox One with just 2 AA can last more than 20

Get a PC. Or get a Xbox one and build a PC like I did. I don't believe that any gaming platform is better than the other, but PC is fun as hell.

Playstation gets exclusives for Destiny and are now the CoD first for DLC... Uncharted and No Mans Sky!!! I have both but would be happy with just the Ps4. Can't stand the clicks on the Xbox one controller. Just feels cheaply made.

And as you already play Destiny in Xbox 360, i think you can carry your progression to Xbox One, someone need to confirm this to me Staying with microsoft will grant you better savings in their deals for gold members. About the backward compatibility, MS is releasing games from time to time, you have to keep on track about what´s avaiable, and there is no need to buy something again. the hole point of the backward compatibility is to let you play your already bought games in a new console. Ps4 is a better piece of hardware. Sony gets special treatment from bungie. I'd go ps4 alone for the chance at Hawkmoon.

Go where you're friends are, that experience is better playing alone regardless if the graphics are 50k with 200fps

Lots of fanboi bait.. Reality: what games do to you want to play and is your destiny progress a big deal? I don't have an epeen alas so I can't talk about how important pixels are to immersion. I'm an Xbox guy. I love the MS games and my friends on xbox live. The PS4 is a great console and has a lot of exclusive stuff coming down the pipes. Honestly, pick the one you want. You can't go wrong. Don't listen to the fanbois. My xbox one is now the center of my living room and that's great for me.

I run ps4 because I've always been a PlayStation user. If you have x360, you're used to the controller, you have a current Xbox live account etc I'd suggest you stick with Xbox. Unless there are ps4 exclusive games that would make you switch. (The gran truismo series has kept me firmly planted in sony's camp)

Than go ps4, because of the extra exclusives, due to the fact in future destiny DLCs (taken king and so on) playstation will only get more and more. Plus there is no man's sky and so on. Plus you can will be able to get morpheus when it comes out.

Ive never met a person in my life who actually believed xbox is a better system then playstation and the only 2 idiots i know who bough an xbox returned it in a week and bought a ps4
