Looking to upgrade my console, tell me what I should get and why

Hey everyone, I really appreciate all of the feedback! It was great to hear a lot of real opinions, suggestions, and information about both systems. It was a lot of reading last night / this morning to catch up on everything, but I feel WAY more informed than before.
I made this post to get some information to help me make a good decision on a new console and I think with all of your help it did. Didn't make this to troll/start a huge debate on here, but I guess it comes with the territory on a forum where people are passionate about their gaming systems.
[b]I made a random decision yesterday and pre-ordered the TTK PS4. I have enough store credit from previous trade ins at GameStop to make it affordable. Also will be trading in my 360 for an additional $100 off. So it looks like I will be starting from scratch, but I have enough friends on the PS+ network to make it fun.[/b]
Again, I really appreciate all of the feedback/suggestions/opinions from you guys. It was a great read and I think I learned all I needed to make the right decision for myself.
Also, thanks for all of the congratulations on me becoming a dad. Although I am still about 6 months out from having that new little one in my arms, I couldn't be more excited about it.

I've had a Xbox 360 for a few years now and most of my friends either have a Xbox One or a PS4 (it's about a 50/50 split). I recently found out that I am going to be a dad (due late January 2016) and because of this and all of the future late nights that come with that in my future, I got permission from the wife to upgrade, so help me figure out what to get.
Since I am already a Microsoft user, obviously going with the Xbox One seems like the easiest one to upgrade to, but I'm open to suggestions.
For the Xbox, I am already familiar with the Xbox Live stuff and I'm already paying the yearly online fee, no need to cancel service etc.
If I upgrade to the Xbox One, do I need to start over with new characters or would my character carry over?
Is the Xbox One backwards compatible with my current 360 games (Destiny, Halo Series, GTA5) or do I have to buy new games no matter what?
Any other benefits to sticking with Microsoft?
As for the PS4, I don't have too much knowledge about this system. I've heard it's got better graphics, but I've also heard the online servers are unreliable leaving you unable to play often? Is it worth it? What other reasons make it worth switching?

3 RepliesI have always been much happier with the single player games on Playstation then on Xbox. And if you are going to be a dad single player games are going to be a much better option then online games for the next several years

1 ReplyI would say PS4 but since you're going to be a dad I think you should go with Xbox1 so you don't have to grind again you might not have time to.

I picked ps4 because I believe it is the better of the 2 (only marginally), but realistically your determining factors should be the following 2 things above all else. 1. Which system do your friends have? This is important because hypothetically if one of the gen 8 consoles were just a reskin of gen 7 and the other was what it is now and all your mates were on the reskin, you would probably get more enjoyment out of the reskin. 2. What exclusives do you prefer the look of? No point in getting a console and then being constantly let down because all the games you want to play are on the other console. I am sure through all these comments there are gonna be plenty of people saying "the controller is better on this console" or "this network is better than the other" and the like but just ignore all that because it is all uninformed nonsense and blind fanboyism. In the end you are gonna enjoy whatever console you get so pick the one you will get a little more enjoyment out of.

Congrats mate! Id say upgrade to the xbone since you can carry your characters/progress over. I personally dont feel either system is superior they both have pros and cons (have both, like both) just my 2 cents.

1 ReplyI had a 360, loved it dearly, still do. I picked up a PS4 for this gen. My friends were going to get the One, but I convinced them to get the PS4. I honestly don't know why I chose this system. I'm not saying that I regret it, but I really didn't have a reason to pick this up. Also, your GTA account can transfer to any next-gen system. EX: I did 360 to PS4.

2 RepliesFirst off congratulations on the bub it's a awesome feeling second I personally would go with xbox I personally have a lot of faith in xbox the controller just feels nicer and I am so excited for the next halo as for backwards play they just said at e3 they are releasing old games on xbox one all you do is put your old game save it to hard drive when that game has been converted as for destiny I'm not sure if they are still letting you transfer but good luck son

Whatever you do, if you're going to buy the Taken King, get the physical collector's edition for $80 (assuming you live in the US) Only $20 more but you get all expansions which are worth about 80 extra if bought separately, plus you get extra goodies. Congtratulations on your future Fathership!!

Go with Xbox One. Your progress carries over and they are introducing backwards compatibility later this year.

I just bought a new x1 500gb halo today on Amazon for $332 with shipping. Actually got it for $292 (new Amazon card) You will need to buy a X1 destiny disk and you will automatically carry over your stats. GameStop has it for $20 right now.

You'll be able to remote play your video games on any Windows device connected to the same network. - Better controller with an elite version coming soon.

First of all congratulations on being a dad! That must be an awesome feeling! Good luck on everything mate. Second of all, I am personally like a strict playstation user myself (nothing against Xbox just have always played playstation) but I think for you, an Xbox 1 would be better! However if you want to continue playing Destiny and GTA on the one, then you would probably need to buy them again. Same thing goes for the Playstation. However if you switch to Playstation, you will need to restart on Destiny, I don't think it is the same for GTA however. Also if you are going for graphics then don't listen to any propaganda that many people throw at you. Both of the consoles have the same power in graphics and both of the consoles have their own large collection of exclusives.

6 RepliesI'm a ps4 user. My only complaints are the ps4 controller isn't good quality, I'm on my second one. Also I'm an online gamer and the psn has had enough down times to just annoy the crap out of me. So I say since you've been on xbox and I know that they have a better track record with their online and their controller isn't as prone to issues like the ps4 has been for me, go with xbox one.
