Looking to upgrade my console, tell me what I should get and why

Hey everyone, I really appreciate all of the feedback! It was great to hear a lot of real opinions, suggestions, and information about both systems. It was a lot of reading last night / this morning to catch up on everything, but I feel WAY more informed than before.
I made this post to get some information to help me make a good decision on a new console and I think with all of your help it did. Didn't make this to troll/start a huge debate on here, but I guess it comes with the territory on a forum where people are passionate about their gaming systems.
[b]I made a random decision yesterday and pre-ordered the TTK PS4. I have enough store credit from previous trade ins at GameStop to make it affordable. Also will be trading in my 360 for an additional $100 off. So it looks like I will be starting from scratch, but I have enough friends on the PS+ network to make it fun.[/b]
Again, I really appreciate all of the feedback/suggestions/opinions from you guys. It was a great read and I think I learned all I needed to make the right decision for myself.
Also, thanks for all of the congratulations on me becoming a dad. Although I am still about 6 months out from having that new little one in my arms, I couldn't be more excited about it.

I've had a Xbox 360 for a few years now and most of my friends either have a Xbox One or a PS4 (it's about a 50/50 split). I recently found out that I am going to be a dad (due late January 2016) and because of this and all of the future late nights that come with that in my future, I got permission from the wife to upgrade, so help me figure out what to get.
Since I am already a Microsoft user, obviously going with the Xbox One seems like the easiest one to upgrade to, but I'm open to suggestions.
For the Xbox, I am already familiar with the Xbox Live stuff and I'm already paying the yearly online fee, no need to cancel service etc.
If I upgrade to the Xbox One, do I need to start over with new characters or would my character carry over?
Is the Xbox One backwards compatible with my current 360 games (Destiny, Halo Series, GTA5) or do I have to buy new games no matter what?
Any other benefits to sticking with Microsoft?
As for the PS4, I don't have too much knowledge about this system. I've heard it's got better graphics, but I've also heard the online servers are unreliable leaving you unable to play often? Is it worth it? What other reasons make it worth switching?

A good number of games play at significantly higher graphic levels on the ps4. One example is battlefield. On ps4 it can play at 1080 p I believe, but on xbox one it only plays at 720 i or p or whatever. I'm not sure why this is but look it up. Also, ps4 has a better selection of games. It is a much better system overall. I have researched the two heavily. I have a ps4 and have almost since the launch of it. You're making a big mistake if you get the Xbox one over the PS4 my friend. You should definitely trust me on this. You will be happy you did

Just get Xbone. Year one exclusives aren't far off and your stats on 360 [b]will[/b] carry over.

Xbox one isn't backwards compatible, YET. This "holiday season" they said they would have over 100 titles available to be backwards compatible. Halo will most likely be included since Microsoft owns it.

If your gonna use netflix/hulu/ media stuff, an xbone with kinect is the way to go. PS4 does perform slightly better if your into raw performance.

Get what your friends are with, if that's 50/50 get which system has the games you want to play with said friends, if you still can't decide, pick the system with the better (and more) exclusives, if that doesn't help ask your friends on each console how active they are, if say your friends are more active on Xbox, and you are an active gamer, go with that, but if say its vice versa go ps4. There's lots of things that can determine your next console, my decision was pretty easy because I only have 1 friend who plays Xbox, and 40+ who play on ps4, hope your decision in the end brings some great gaming experiences

I prefer my ps4. But I would get what your friends upgraded to. It is a lot more fun to play with your group of people

Although you would need to rebut the games for your xboxone, you can transfer over you characters from Gtav and destiny (not sure about halo). From what I understand Xbox has more stable servers, but I myself aren't able to confirm this myself. Most videos I have seen of pvp hackers (not lag switchers, just blatant hacking) have been on the ps4, however this could just be because destiny has a bigger player base then xbox's destiny, ergo they are more likely to have hackers. Normally when people ask this question on the forums I tell them to go with the console they have friends on. But since you have friends on both I recommend thinking about whether or not your willing to start from scratch or whether the timed exclusives are worth starting anew.

Xbox one, services stay up more for starters. This is coming from a guy who has both consoles and play both, but main reason is if you already been stung destiny, you can transfer you data from Xbox 360 to One very easy. If you make the switch to ps4, you will start again.

Play wherever your friends are. If a solo player, go to PS4. Only bonus is the exclusive content.

I moved from Xbox to PS4 for 4 reasons: 1) PS4 is more powerful, 2) Xbox's terrible PR prior to launch, 3) at the time, PS4 was $100 cheaper, and 4) exclusive developers Naughty Dog and Guerrilla Games. With Bungie making Destiny cross-platform, the sting of missing Halo was minimal. As far as PSN goes, it's been down a few times, but mostly because of Lizard Squad. I was on XBL for years and I feel PSN's reputation is exaggerated. If I were moving from 360 to a new console now, it would be tough to say which I would choose, because Xbox One is so cheap and familiar. I was the first of my friends to adopt the new gen of consoles, so it was up to them to follow or not. So again, ultimately, what are your friends playing, and are they happy with it? Answer those questions and you have your answer.

Even as a PlayStation guy, I say get the XBox One. You can transfer all your old stuff.
