I hated that I didn't keep any of mine as its fun to use, cool looking and appears to be a decent choice in crucible.
Last week I was bored, so I ran a daily. I didn't give it much thought, finished the mission and after the cut scene got one. So I leveled it and play patrols with it.

How did you get the Stranger's Rifle from a daily? It's only given after completing the Black Garden mission at the end of vanilla story mode on a new character.

I don't know why, but the daily was the final mission and at the end of the cut scene it popped up just like it did the 1st time. Pretty cool. I still use it sometimes during patrols.
