I think we can all agree there's essentially no reason to bother with Destiny's open worlds, thereby trivializing a part of the game that just sizzles with potential. Well here are some ideas I had that could help bring Guardians back into the open worlds. Also, I pretty much stole the "Battleground Patrol" idea from Bdobbinsftw. He used different terminology and probably had some other details in mind, but the premise still exists. I think it'd be a neat OPTION at least.
Anyway, here they are.
-Allow us to pick a particular area in the map to spawn, as opposed to being stuck starting at the same location...as has been the case.
-Sparrow Races, including preset races and player-initiated ones (think NFS: Underground 2).
-Add more vehicles; give Sparrows offensive capabilities, create a vehicle that lets us use our characters abilities in a mobile fashion, etc. Allow all to be customized and, depending on the vehicle, tuned.
-Loot Chest Hunt: First Guardian to find 3 (or more) chests in a set amount of time wins. Additionally, these chests would be event-exclusive and offer anything from Rares to Exotics. However, the found gear isn't automatically added to your inventory. Instead, Guardians will have to win the Hunt and then, at the end, choose one of the items they've received from chests. The rest are either discarded or one is randomly awarded to the loser.
-Parkour: Platforming challenges throughout the maps (Guardians can't kill each other). First to the end point receives a packages (similar to Faction/Vanguard packages). Add "Hardkour," where platforming is more demanding and Guardian abilities can slightly nudge others (as well as themselves).
-Class-specific Quests: Each class can take up a Quest (either from the Tower or while on Patrol) to earn more cosmetic apparel. Hunters can be tasked with solo Assassinations that allow them to collect the remains of their most famous kills; Titans can do group (or solo) Runs to earn stripes and marks, these could include defending an area (Defense), attack an area (Assault) or lead chase sequences where they're constantly on their Sparrows or other vehicles while in a constant combat scenario (Heists) against large and daunting opponents; Warlocks can do Investigation quests that involve collecting information throughout the terrain, but as they collect more info, resistance grows stronger and stronger, eventually leading to final encounters which may or may not require objective-based uses of their abilities, ultimately rewarding them with scholar-like articles to display. All of these occur in and throughout the open world, sometimes simultaneously.
-Battleground Patrol: Guardians who enter Battleground are at ends with one another (think a separate open-world PvP). Level advantages are enabled (matchmaking can make sure players of similar Levels are kept together). Recently joining players will have a 10-second grace period upon spawning. Whenever you down a Guardian, they're equipped items are dropped and salvagable as loot (they're included in a pool, similar to a chest--Ether Key limits apply). If any items are left after a certain period of time, these will be returned to the downed Guardian. If a downed Guardian runs out of unequipped items, they're returned to Orbit after said period of time. Additionally, only players who did damage to the recently downed Guardian will be allowed to take loot. Guardians who've earned a Killing Spree (5 or more kills without dying) or have obtained an Exotic from a "Downed Guardian Loot Drop" (if you will) will be marked as Wanted, alerting any and all nearby Guardians to their location. As Killing Spree Guardians accrue more kills without dying, Wanted Guardians will gradually have their loadouts publicly displayed in the open world from afar, one item at a time. This, in addition to displaying the number of successful Guardian kills, can be referred to as Notoriety. If a Guardian attempts to return to Orbit, they must wait a slightly extended period of time. If a Wanted Guardian attempts to return to Orbit, their wait time is further increased and nearby Guardians are alerted. These can trigger separate events called Extraction where the Wanted Guardian doesn't need to be in "Ghost Mode" to return to Orbit, but they must stay within a certain vicinity or their Extraction is delayed or cancelled.
-Fully destructible dropships that drop loot.

I would never play Battleground Patrol and here's why. I don't need to be fighting aliens like I always do and then randomly get shot in the back to potentially lose hard earned exotics to some asshole. Nor would I wish that upon any other guardian. I have been playing this game since day one and have not received a Ghjallahorn. Now, imagine after all this time I finally happen upon said Ghjallahorn and once I equip it, I get killed by some jack-off. How pissed to you think ANY player would be in that situation. Now, if I were to play a mode such as this, maybe fighting Guardians could be optional (something you set up in your game settings) for instance, passive mode or battle mode. Also maybe Battleground Patrol could increase enemy levels and numbers as well as increase the rate at which events start. Also adding mini-bosses in the open world would make it much more fun. In summary, not bad ideas overall, but BG Patrol would need to have boundaries. We want to make the game better, not a rage/hate fest.
