Mtashed's Guide #2 - Why trials is harder than any other playlist

First off... does anyone here do great in crucible but can't get to the lighthouse in trials? Anyone feel really confident with PVP in destiny, but when you get into trials your KD drops a bunch? You aren't alone...Even for myself, I STRUGGLE to have the same scores as skirmish, despite being a 3v3 game type. Is it the skill of the other team? NO Is it gun choice? of course not Is it the way trials game play varies? BINGO Now, lets get onto WHY. ------------------------------- In skirmish / control / clash, if you die...you wait a few seconds, and you get back into the game. You keep doing this, and you end with a 21-7 score... WICKED! That is a 3.0 KD ratio, and very good for some.... In control, if you flank around the map and die "who cares...I can just respawn!" and this continues to happen game in, game out, and you develop a very bad habit. You feel it is "ok" to die. You rush more, you play carelessly, and you feel "meh" I'll make up for it next time. ----------------------- #Habits In trials, every death matters... it isn't "next time" anymore. IT IS NEXT ROUND. Due to respawns being disabled, the second you die, your team has an unbelievable disadvantage. 2 v 3 in skirmish isn't half bad... you can respawn, flank, and most likely be more effective doing this than pushing with your team. But in trials, when you are dead, you are no longer a threat. You don't have the potential to throw thorn shots at people or a clutch grenade. You are dead, useless, and in the back of your head you are still ok with it. -------------------------------- How do we stop this? 1. Be committed to your deaths. When you play skirmish, sit there until you are revived and feel the burden of being dead. Recognize " wow... my careless play there completely lost us map control" or "shit my team mate died trying to revive me" 2. Play like a pussy. Yep. I just said that. If you eat a thorn bullet before you fire a shot, RUN. Don't commit to losing fights like people do in other play lists just because you MIGHT out play them. You need the mentality that "You only commit to a winning fight" This isn't because you shouldn't be confident with your skills, but because each life is so important in EVERY round of trials. One kill can cause a super. One kill can lead to your team being zoned from a flag at the end of a round. One kill matters 10x more than any other play list. (notice how I have said this like 15 times?????) ----------------------------- Map Flow / Set ups So Trials of Osiris is a different beast. Each round is like a new game. The same routes will be taken. The same angles will be shot from, and the same "plays" are made time and time again. In other game modes, it is easier to improvise due to the swapping spawns and areas to attack from. In trials, it is very "set up" based. There are only so many "tricky" things you can do in a trials game.... so how do we improve? We do what everyone else is doing... better. I know this kind of lame to say, but there is no avoiding this situation. If you want to be better at trials and have any sort of "edge" in map control, you need to PERFECT routes. If you are getting to the sniper ledge on "Widow's Court" you NEED to get there at the fastest speed possible. YOU NEED to have your timing down to a science, so that when you do run up against other players trying to snipe you from across the map, you are already aiming at their -blam!-ing head. Little things like this give you micro-advantages over the other team and can control what they do next. If you have a lane completely covered by sniper fire before they can advance up it, you have now forced them to take an alternative route, and do something they aren't comfortable or familiar with. YOU control the flow of the map. ----------------------------- Revives If you have never played skirmish, you will feel awkward with reviving. When do you do it? When don't you? etc etc etc. See, new players REVIVE EVERYONE... oh good god do they revive. There will be 7 snipers ( yes i Know this is impossible) aiming right at my ear and I still get revived, then cry when I am instantly killed again. Reviving should be looked at as a privilege, and only in prime opportunities. Rule of thumb is, if someone sees you doing it, don't do it. There are a BUNCH of ways to kill people off revives, from LDR shots to sticky grenades, and by reviving you not only put yourself in direct fire, but your team mate too. It is far better being 2 v 3 than 1.5 v 3, then eventually 1 v 3 as you struggle to counter fire / die due to reviving. **How to properly revive** Here are a few tips to actually help. If you plan to revive / suicide, do so as a sun singer. Either go in with your super up spamming nades to scare them away, or do some damage, sacrifice yourself, and "self rez" and revive them for a super tanky revive trade that they will ahve trouble dealing with. With other supers like blade dancer / / golden gun, you can pop it so make them scatter, and get the revive off before chasing (especially effective with alpha Lupe gear) Draw people AWAY from the bodies. Sometimes teams are smart and won't chase, but if you hear 3 blink shotguns behind you, book it around the map until you have an opening. Some of my best 1 v 3 situations were just SURVIVING until i could get my team back up How to stop one bang's off revives When being revivied: Turn around and look down to minimize head shot potential or blink instantly - Spam that -blam!-ing button like your life depends on it ( it does) AS THE REVIVER: You can help your team mates TREMENDOUSLY by standing in a semi safe area to the side of them, then running ACROSS them, and jumping. Not only does this mess up the enemy sniper's aim assist, if he somehow corrects in time, he will most likely hit you in the body vs the head. ----------------- By playing a bit safer, a bit smarter, and recognizing how important each life in, you will improve in trials. It takes time, and is the hardest play list to master. Find some good friends, play together often, and try not to get bent out of shape if you lose. Here are a few video guides that might help you in trials: Tilt ( anger management: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGMugrafgSo Flanking: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNbtDK6lD9I ---------------------- Sorry guys. Kind of rushed this near the end due to work getting a bit busy. I can add to it if needed. AMA guys, I'm here all day to help.
