For those that say it's Norse explain this, the Norse word for ship is "fjord" pronounced (fee-yord) it is derived from the same language seeing as it is heimdall's horn
Therefore it is pronounced (gee-yallar-horn)
It's not Swedish
English
-
It's Old Norse...from the 1200's. In Norse mythology it's the name of the horn Heimdallr blows at the beginning of Ragnarok.

And, make sure you know how to say it before you pretend you know another language.
-
Yea but soft g doesnt go geeyallerhorn its yallerhorn
-
Idk man gjallarhorn sounds pretty Mexican to me
-
Gj is a soft g, ie a j which in Scandinavian is y, obviously. The swedes tend to soften the g with a soft vowel: stressed e, i, y, ä and ö. On the other hand when you look at the Norwegians they tend to use gj even preceding a soft vowel eg. Göra and gjøre the verb to do is pretty similar in pronunciation. Danish to the best of my knowledge doesn't do soft Gs, however I might be wrong. As far as Icelandic goes I do not know what rule they have as to regards with this, but I do know that ll makes a tl, with Icelandic being the closest modern Scandinavian language to old Norse. The most likely would be either yatlahorn or gatlahorn, personally I still say gally.

I've been trying to tell people this
-
I am Danish. Gjallarhorn in nordic mythology is the horn the God Heimdal blows when Ragnarok comes. "gjalde" is a verb for a loud sound. A "fjord" is where rivers run into the ocean. It has salt water.
-
So how is it pronounced!
-
Dont know how to write it phonetically. But guess pronunciation of "giallarhhorn" would come close. In nordic languages the "j" is a softer sound than in English. More like "i"
-
I thought a "fjord" is sort of a river/lake thingy, to be precise: I'm quite sure it is...

Wrong again...

Edited by LegendarySyn: 7/3/2015 2:37:58 PMYou are wrong again. It's still an Old Norse word, not Icelandic.
