http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-33373466
The death of a woman in Washington state in spring has been confirmed as the first US fatality from measles in 12 years, health authorities say.
Officials said the link was not spotted until a post-mortem examination because the woman lacked some of the common symptoms of measles, such as a rash.
Measles is highly contagious and easily transmitted but it is rarely fatal.
The death comes after an outbreak of measles at California's Disneyland in 2014 that infected over 100 people.
Although no one died from that outbreak, it sparked an intense debate across the US about mandatory vaccinations for schoolchildren, which some parents oppose.
Officials said the case in Washington state was not linked to that Disneyland incident.
The woman was on medication that had weakened her immune system, Washington State Department of Health spokesman Donn Moyer told reporters.
She was hospitalised for several health conditions in the spring at a facility in Clallam County, Mr Moyer said.
"She was there at the same time as a person who later developed a rash and was contagious for measles," he added.
Officials have not revealed her name or her age but did say that she was not elderly. An autopsy concluded the cause of death was pneumonia due to measles.
"This tragic situation illustrates the importance of immunising as many people as possible to provide a high level of community protection against measles," Mr Moyer said.
There have been 176 cases of measles in the US so far this year, with 117 of those cases linked to the Disney outbreak, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The last US death from measles was in 2003.
Another round of applause for the a̶n̶t̶i̶ ̶v̶a̶x̶x̶e̶r̶s̶ terrorists.

Anti vaxxers are morons. It should be legally required to vaccinate your child.
-
Thanks for the intel Daz.

The fact that people continue to say vaccinations should be forced are misunderstanding human rights. All science and opinions aside, forced medication is what tyranny does regardless of its good intentions. Forcing medication for the good of the people is like banning pornography for the good of morality, that's where many of the anti vaccine sentiment comes from is not the vaccines themselves but rather the climate that we should be forced to take it.

Edited by Recon Number 54: 7/3/2015 5:31:50 PMSingle death from an infectious disease within a population of 300+ million is not statistically relevant nor when the individual case is examined on its own, is not at all relevant to the subject of immunization other than by just the name of the disease. In other words, it is a curiosity, a statistical outlier, is a poor sample to be used to make a broad point, but can be of interest to folks as a simple news item, provided they understand the context. Similarly, it would be foolish to state the fact that "in 2013 there were 783 cases of Bubonic Plague reported worldwide, including 126 deaths" without providing relevant and important context. This story, while interesting, has very little to do with vaccinations, or the stupid controversies surrounding them.

In other news, 32,719 deaths were reported last year in the United States... by automobile accidents.

In other news, babies are being killed in abortions.
-
176 cases? That's insane! If you round that up enough, it's the vast majority of Americans!

This is what I think should happen: vaccines should be mandatory for EVERYONE regardless of religious or political beliefs. Unless your child is in danger of dying from the vaccine, there should be no exceptions. Those who refuse to vaccinate their kids should be stripped of their health insurance and government aid.

That's such a low a death rate that I can see why you care that much. The only reason to care is to make fun of religious people and conservatives, but I doubt that's your intention.

Edited by Hunter: 7/3/2015 9:20:34 PM
fatality
All kidding aside, why is there a rift between people who get vaccinated and people who choose not to?

This a monument to humanity's ignorance.
