DBZ was always meant to eventually transform gohan into the main character, with goku slowly fading down until his death, and gohan holy shit moment with cell making him the ultimate fighter... However to toriyama's surprise gohan's popularity did not pick up as expected, the series lost popularity and well... The story came back to goku to be the one killing majin Buu... There's even an interview of toriyama on the subject #truestory

Toriyama also has Alzheimer's and it was even rumored he had forgotten about gohan after the cell saga. Those are the only episodes I own is the fights leading up to gohan becoming an ascended sayian and defeating cell.

Watched it on TV, hated buu. How can you go from THE iconic fight with the baddest ability stealing threat in the galaxy to a pink blob who turns people to candy?

During the Cell Saga, yes. But then Goku and Vegeta learned how to turn into deities.

He did but it seems to come from explosive temper triggered by endangering people he cares about. So yeah, just not by simply arm wresting him or something. GT never technically happened as it was fan-made however Akira Toriyama is making them again so we'll see how he intended Goku and Gohan to play out! :D
