Most of the debt is to China, who relies on us to buy their goods...
We could stop buying their products and they would economically collapse

Ah. Finally, an actual answer. I thank you, sir.
-
Well so would we...where else would we buy goods
-
We'd make them ourselves again like we used to
-
Who is "we"
-
Sorry for being unclear. By "we" I mean the United States. The US relies on goods from China, so it couldn't just say, "well we will just stop buying your goods." China holds US debt and knows the US relies on them for trade. China has the upper hand.

It's all useless stuff from China the quality stuff we need is made in America for the most part other than clothes made in various places but not China
-
But we live in a society of consumption, just like other Western countries. We buy outside of what we need.
-
They need us more than we need them
-
Really? If China disappeared tomorrow? Where would we buy goods? China can export anywhere but few places produce goods better than China. Unfortunately, we need them more

I think we would survive without the crappy trinkets and knockoffs
I think we would survive without the crappy trinkets and knockoffs
They make nothing essential I don't see why we don't cut off spending with China
-
We would make them on our own soil

But it would take a long time to develop the proper infrastructure necessary for mass manufacturing. Also, factory labor in the US would not be that popular, but a huge labor force would be required to make enough goods to meet the demand. The reason China is so successful in manufacturing is that it has a large labor force that is paid low wages, conditions other countries cannot replicate
