Again I have to explain that Gohan has a hidden power. A power so strong that it surpasses Goku but Gohan never shows this power.
Think about it. Goku went SS3 and couldn't defeat Majin Buu. Gohan swings by as a SS and one hits Majin Buu. Gohan is extremely powerful and they only ever show us glimpses of his true power.

He just wanted his sons to step up as the defenders of earth since he won't always be around. Goku went toe to toe with Kid Buu, which was arguably much more dangerous then the buu Gohan went up against, as a ssj 2. And don't forget, Gohan was nearly killed by the fat buu while Goku was slapping him around as a ssj 3.

His full potential was unlocked by the old supreme Kai. His power is no longer hidden. Yes Gohan was stronger than both Goku and Vegeta at that point, but due to the fact that he has not been training he is considerably weaker now. Gohan was the strongest z fighter at times but that is no longer the case.
