Defending Elitism in the Gaming Community WARNING! LONG READ!

Elitism is a heavily stigmatized ideology in the gaming community and due to the heavy prominence of condescending and insulting behaviors, people tend to avoid those who take gaming seriously. Now, as many know, I self describe as an elitist. I don't believe in carrying bad players or playing with them for the matter and my friends often take offense to it or think I'm a douche. However, the concept that many fail to grasp is that gaming is not just a hobby for some people. It's a daily ritual or a major part of his/her life. This could be because of many reasons from psychological and/or physical incapabilities and may pertain with limited social skills. Now, some elitists are genuinely just rude. I'm not speaking for the more extreme ones who literally harass casuals or bad players, which I unfortunately have done on several occasions, I'm speaking for the softer ones who just want to play with people of their caliber and demand harder content. Before I end this drawn out post, here are some good reasons why Elitism isn't as bad as you might think: 1. Elitists just want to play with good players: We're not usually as open to carrying as others and we find low skilled players incredibly annoying. We don't hate them per say, we just want to get things done with people with our level of skill and dedication without the immensely annoying screw ups. Think of like this: if you have a bad player and a good player, why would you pick the former over the latter? 2. We're usually the ones who get you your strategies: This isn't every awesome player, but elitists like Datto are the ones who discover the best strategies for Destiny, WOW, COD etc. It's near impossible being world's first for completing a level or publishing the best strategy for an incredibly difficult boss. 3. Not all of us are dicks: Not all elitists are socially incompetent teenagers. Some of us just value our games very highly and don't want people ruining our only fun time. Gaming, although a hobby for most, is the blood and lifeline for others.

  • I definitely just want to throw in there that the people calling us "elitists" are scrublets. First off I have over 3500 in grimoire, 3555 to be exact, and I've been playing since Day one through all of this bullshit with this game. I play a few hours a day and work full-time but what makes me an "elitist" is the fact that I don't carry people and I don't interact with people whose guardians look basic. But can you blame me? Most people who play stop playing between the add-ons and then come back expecting to be helped with all their stuff but when they leave and we stay and keep on then how are you helping? Secondly, there was a time when heavy ammo was scarce and raids were in high demand which makes everyone run you do important, why should we have to burn all our synthesis to do DPS because in all reality you're being carried and now your job is to not die or just distract enemies. Finally, I have over 1500 hours gameplay. 1500. I've been through raids that lasted 6-8 hours just trying beat atheon or crota, this means that I've taken time to understand and learn to play the game, you think because you have 130 hours in you should have gallarhorn? No you should play more so you can learn all the strategies and get rewarded for it. The idea of the game is to 'Become Legend' last time I checked, just because you can buy armor doesn't mean that it's gonna have good stats. There's a reason that when people see my guardian (amongst other elites) before I even land in tower they just spam with invites. Scrubs and casuals may call us elitists or whatever for not being nice, but we have every right. None of them helped us become what we are, and I sure as hell was not anyone who needed a sherpa or raid team or cheese strategy. If you're a scrublet or casual in all honesty and respectively, you have no right to speak to us about not playing for you nor do you have the right to call us "elitists". We're veterans to you kinderguardians.
