Ever since before the release of Destiny Thorn has been my favorite gun. The backstory was cool, it looked cool, and after I saw the final perks I knew it was going to be one of my favorite weapons.
I got it around the first couple weeks after release, and anyone who knows original Thorn knows it wasn't that good. Best weapons at the time were the Vex and the Suros, and even though I had the latter I still chose to use thorn ( I secretly thought it had become my friend 😉). I got thousands of kills with it, and then I hit that point that many Destiny players go through. I got bored. I played until a week before TDB and didn't pick up Destiny again until around a week after HoW dropped.
When I came back I was hurt. A man shouldn't love 1's and 0's on a screen, deep down I know I shouldn't care about code on a disk; but I had become...attached to the gun. So much so, that what became of Thorn was painful to witness. A gun that used to require some amount of skill had become a monster. A way to easily distinguish n00bs from everybody else. With thousands of kills with this gun, I've become branded as a n00b. My favorite gun has become a sin to use, and I can no longer use it without being branded. I'm not angry, and I'm not looking for nerfs or buffs. I just wanted to get this off my chest.
PS. Sorry about format, I'm on mobile.

I'm in the exact same boat.

If they reduced the damage of thorns dot by 50% but increase the duration by 50% in PvP nobody would QQ. Or they could reduce the damage of the dot by 45-65% but allow it to stack with each shot it would make it way more usable in PvE and not broken in PvP

As an original Thorn user, I can completely agree with this thread

nice post. I have the thorn but haven't used it at all. I got it as a collectors piece. I never played Pvp until 2 IB's ago and I did so for the thorn bounty. Turns out I like it, IB that is. I still play crucible but god its def worse than the glorious IB. Regardless of the mode of PvP Im in, I murder guardians with one of my many scout rifles and stay away from using Thorn, Vex, TLW, Suros, Red Death and such because personally I don't think Ill hone my skills using the "training wheels" guns. Its funny how most of the players in the community, even the guys who use the Thorn are annoyed at the very least when going against 1 or more of them, yet I still get hate mail from dildos who are pissed that I killed them with my gally! I spent the entire round wrecking their face with my legendary scout rifle as they desperately try to get the kill with their Thorn/Crutch, and then get mad cause my heavy slot was open for an exotic, and I filled the slot with gally. Personally, I rather face a team that all has gally's equipped and is using more respectable primaries than the other way around.

Wait, you played a week of TDB? You realized Thorn was buffed back in Vanilla right? Did you completely miss the changes to the weapon? Are you dense? Stupid post.
-
Relax nerd Thorn is just having it's prime as Luke Smith disclosed in an interview I quote "every gun has it's season.' get over it have some fun with it while it's top dawg and pucker up for the next "Season".

Old Thorn and the gamble struggle with Vex&Suros
-
Jeez, that's rough.
-
What do you mean? Your kd is negative. So rightfully branded a Noob. Doesn't matter if you use Thorn or a different gun
-
Bruh... Who cares what others think? People say that thorn requires no skill, that BS is a weak excuse, give your wife or any gamer who doesnt play FPS a thorn and run them through crucible, judge the results. By that very logic, an unskilled person would be able to start wrecking, that is not the case. Now if the rebuttal is, well they have to have some FPS knowledge, then that goes against the very same logic they applied in the sense that IT DOES REQUIRE SKILL to use. People just look for ways to bring in excuses when going up against Thorns. Truth is, the hate mail I get is from, TLW! But never Thorn, interesting huh? I agree that crucible is unbalanced, but if you earned your Thorn and used it with great success, keep using it. People will be salty about handcannons while using handcannons. You want to know what will happen next? Whatever major nerfs an buffs are coming down the pipe will eventually lead to another weapon that people will complain about, while no mention of Thorn anyway in sight. To hell with these groups, if I or you want to use an OP weapon, GO FOR IT. GET YOU'RE KILLS AND ENJOY THE SALTY TEARS. Nobody is going to stop you, what? They will send hate mail or gang up on you in the forums? Lmfao, words bruh, nothing but words from kids. If you feel that much about it, then start off with a legendary an if the scene is nothing BUT thorns an TLWs, bust out yours. I always start off with either Jewel or The Scholar, OP weapons on their own, but if the scene switches up, switch up too if it becomes over bearing.

Same story here, first exotic gun i used that thing for everything pve even though it sucked, now... I never use it. ;(

This is my problem, I really really do not want this to be Cod, with Cod its 1-2-3 shots and at times just 1 well placed one. Destiny is almost there with Thorn, Red Death, Last Word, and other Legendary Hand Cannons. So then, what seperates Destiny from Cod? Basically the look, feel, and Supers. Nothing else would be different, same game, different name. If Cod had super suits and supers it'd be Destiny.

I had thorn week 2. I liked her before, but she got a boob job, liposuction, and a nose job and now everyone -blam!-s her. So I bang her sister Red Death or Red Deaths ginger cousin 55 All Fate or the distant cousin Three Little Words.
-
bro I had thorn as soon as it was avalible to get , I too have thousands of kills with it and I mean thousands 55k hand cannon kills total. the way I see it is , I used it when it was considered junk and horrible I earned my damn right to show others how a real hand cannon lover whoops ass with the thorn. if others say crap about it i just laugh at them and kill them even more.
-
Not true, suros was top tier but there were a few guns better than it.
-
Dude if you like the gun keep using it, why do you care if people you won't ever know or talk to think you're a noob? In my opinion anyone not using the best guns is a noob for giving themselves a clear disadvantage. I would always rather win and have people calling me a noob than be on the losing side trying to convince myself I'm better because I use worse guns
-
Does anybody here main legendary primaries when they play the crucible? I have my set up equipped, check it out. The reason I ask is because if you use a legendary in the crucible, how are you dealing with Thorn and Last Word? Any advice for how I should use my load-out to my advantage?
-
I have over 26000 kills with thorn. I have used thorn since week 3 and it easily became my favorite gun to use in PvE and PvP. I never believed it needed a buff. It was one of the best guns period. The buff just destroyed this weapon's reputation.. I haven't touched thorn in a while. I just feel cheap using it. Just put it back to its prebuff stage.. it was a great weapon. I have moved on to the NLB. I really hope bungie doesn't break this gun as well if they decide to buff it.
-
Aw that really sucks, bro. I'm sorry for chu
-
Same here bro..
-
Same here dude, it was great before the buff, now it's so disgusting I don't even want to look at it, it was my first exotic and hopefully the last exotic hand cannon globally used by noobs.
-
I know, man, believe me.

This is my reason why. It's what most players seem to not understand about player vs player game types. One of The only reason hand cannons are so damn powerful is because of the chemical unbalance of weapon types in pvp. Auto rifles counter hand cannons, shotguns counter fusion rifles, pulse rifles counter scout rifles, ect. This is the main problem! By nerfing auto rifles not only have you given hand cannons unstoppable power you have taken out a very important part of equilibrium in this game type. So no, the solution is not in nerfing hand cannons. It's the simple fact that their is now chemical unbalance in the weapon types. Allow me to explain, a hand cannon is short to mid range combat. Hand cannons usally have a slower fire rate with high impact, while auto rifles (used in the same short-mid range combat) has a faster fire rate with a lower impact however, autorifle a can just as easily take down hand cannon users as they would be able to take them down. Just like how pulse rifles can be beaten by scout rifles at mid-long range combat where they beat hancannon users, how shotgun users can easily counter pulse rifle users. It's all about balance so, when it comes down to it all that needs to happen is a autorifle re-buff. This would change so much in player vs player combat.

I feels ya. I saw thorn in the concept arts before the game launched, because of that i knew i wanted the gun. Finally got it before its buff (i think i got it in Nov or Oct). Was so happy that i got it (not as happy like when i got my hawkmoon in march though lol). It had it's cons but overall i loved the gun. Naturally since i had the gun so long I'd have so many kills by now. However with the buff and sudden popularity, I'm apparently grouped with those that are considered to use the gun as a crutch, even though i loved it before the buff. Ah well i guess. I've used it less since I've gotten Hawkmoon, but i still love thorn :)
