Tolerance is a movement that ultimately works against itself. Example:
•Person A believes in tolerance, and is teaching a class on it.
•Person B believes tolerance is a load of bull malarkey, and is in the class, and decides to teach others in the class his opinion on tolerance.
Person A must now either remain tolerant of Person B, and allow them to undermine their efforts, or be intolerant of Person B's opinion, undermining themselves.
So what do we do? We generally accept that the avg person's opinion on most things should be tolerated if not respected. But we have already established a position of 100% tolerance is self defeating.
The answer is simple. Take things issue by issue, case by case. Find your own position, figure out what opposing positions are tolerable, and which ones aren't.
Being tolerant of all gets you nowhere, being intolerant of all gets you nowhere too. You must balance the two to achieve a healthy world outlook that is accepting of new ideas but not permitting of absurdity and extremism.
Discuss.

Two excellent post in one day. Thank you.

You can't be absolutely one or the other. Being 100% tolerant makes you a pussy (pusillanimous for the mods) but being 100% intolerant makes you an asshole

I was about to say that you were shunting things into a black and white label. It's never a good idea. Generally, it's a good rule of thumb to remain tolerant to most, but when you're being stepped on or the threat is there, then that's when you have to try something else. Unfortunately for us, that's how it goes. You can try to be as decent as you can but there's always that one asshole out there. At which point you do what you have to.

Edited by ChuckinDeuces_2: 6/26/2015 1:38:15 AMYou can be respectful and disagree with someone. The last sentence nailed it on the head.

being a tolerant person doesn't mean you're tolerant of all ideas. taht would mean you have to be tolerant of intolerance. people who support tolerance are usually just people who think treating people shittily because of their race, gender, sex, religion, sexual orientation, disability, etc, is a shitty thing to do.

Why not self beating

Edited by Bloom Unknown : 6/25/2015 7:21:18 PMI'm not sure that's accurate. Tolerance, as a movement (which I think is what you are taking about )does seem take issues case by case. It doesn't require tolerance of immorality or unethical behavior and ideologies.
-
Usually with me it is either I don't care enough to listen to the person because their is too much going on in my mind or I have to do something because I felt insulted but then I stop caring again. I guess I just don't care at all.
-
In general, being tolerant of something is a surefire way to not get into a fight. While being tolerant of everything doesn't work, most things are inconsequential and shouldn't be argued over for the sake of peace.
-
Or you could just have it that you don't need to be tolerant to the intolerant.
-
Agreed.

I think that you should have balance in everything in life. The world isn't black and white. Too much of one thing is not good, but not enough of that same thing is equally bad. People shouldn't be 100% for or against anything.

I don't think anyone is liberal enough to tolerate everything.
-
I don't like looking at it like this. Eventually, you're going to contradict yourself to some degree in life. There's no changing that. The people who cry "you're being intolerant to intolerant people" annoy me. It's just another "if we do x, we're no better than them" bullshit arguement.

Britton, your wisdom is showing.

Tolerance of intolerance is intolerance. One spreading tolerance must avoid this conundrum.
