Also, it was legal to kill a Mormon in Missouri till 1976.

Yes. In fact, I actually feel great sympathy for the Mormons in light of how badly the United States government treated them. But by that same token, while I feel sympathetic, I cannot excuse Joseph Smith's own actions which were abominable, as well as the blatant racism and violence of the religion in its early days. It wasn't until relatively recently that minorities could be clerics in the Mormon faith.
