Loads save in New Vegas, Instantly Vilified.

What can i do to get my reputation up in New Vegas? I was playing just now, loaded up a save in goodsprings (i havent played very much, other than to just explore around the community and find various supplies). I got Xander root, which was needed for a quest, and now needed broc flower. So i decided to mark the graveyard as my next map location. I looked up a wiki page earlier, and read that the area had "bloatflies" (i think that's how its spelt?) and those scorpion things...so i wanted to get some stimpacks just in case i needed to heal at some point. So i go to the general store. At that point, i hear the music that plays when you get into a fight with an enemy. "Oh shit". I run into the general store, and the cashier is standing in front of the counter. "LOOK OUT!" he runs towards me, stops, then asks how i am. Weird. Suddenly im getting shot. "What the -blam!-". I turn around, an NPC is glitched inside the store, and hes shooting me, but hes stuck in the doorway, so his bullets are missing most of the time. then the cashier joined in. So i run out, run away into some random home, sleep for 24 hours, expecting some sort of result. when my player wakes up, i get this message. "FOR YOUR MONSTROUS ACTIONS, YOU HAVE BEEN VILIFIED BY THE COMMUNITY" To be honest, Ive never played a fallout game, but i had a feeling there was a reputation system of some sort, so i tried to not do things that would give me the "you have lost karma" message. since i figured that was what would lower my rep in game... But i literally havent done anything. I mean, the only things i could think of that would lower the rep, would be shooting the two mutant mantises outside the schoolhouse, and the one book that i had taken from a random house (which was how i learnt about the karma system in the first place). So how did i get randomly vilified?

Were you accidentally stealing things from people's houses? That drops your karma big time... as far as being vilified goes, maybe you accidentally shot someone in town? Sounds strange... Thinking I might kick off a fresh play through of New Vegas on my 360 this weekend... I've been fiending for some Fallout!
