It was an indirect cause. It was about the southern states to decide for themselves whether they should keep or free slaves. The northern states didn't want the country to split that's why they went to war. It wasn't a moral crusade to rid slavery in the country.

Ok. Slaves were bad and good at the same time. We wouldn't be where we are today without slaves. American development benefited greatly from slaves. Besides, the average slave owner only had around 1 or 2 slaves at most. What you see on TV with the slave owner having a full field of slaves is incorrect.

But in the end the breaking point was self governance that involved slavery. It was not until after the war started that the focus shifted from the practice of slavery to the slaves themselves. I am a southerner, I have pride in my state, and the history of my land, but I think that slavery was an absolutely terrible thing, and I will never understand why in a country where we constantly expressed the merits of freedom we somehow also tried to claim that we owned people.

15 RepliesFirst off I'm not trying to piss anyone off... However; the original official reason for the civil war was to reclaim the land that the south had taken when the seceded... The fight for slavery came after the war had been going on for a while but quickly became the "main reason" because it brought more troops and rallied more people...
