Suppose we were able to cure all disease at this very moment. All of the people who would ordinarily die will now remain alive, resulting in a higher-than-usual population. This effect will only be further compounded by those people who would have died now being capable of having [more] children. However, you may have noticed this problem isn't strictly limited to disease. Any mechanism, tangible or not, which prolongs the life of someone who would otherwise die, will in effect produce a higher-than-normal population.
So, while saving people sounds good on paper, the inevitable result is an increased population and its subsequent effects (eg. overpopulation resulting in famine, crime, etc...).
What is your solution to the problem?

If we cured all diseases then all that research money could be used to further develop sustainable living and future tech.

you're assuming we cant figure out to sustain higher populations. reduce, reuse, recycle, and terrarform the sahara and Siberia.

Simple, don't cure all diseases, if you do it's not exactly hard to create one that doesn't have a vaccine.... How about any AIDS conspiracies?...

Edited by BIG IRON ENERGY: 6/21/2015 12:02:43 AMI really should wear a Stab Vest when I'm here, there's that much edge. all I believe is this; if scientists somehow happen to make a miracle drug that can cure Cancer and other diseases, it would never make it out of the lab, because the government would never let it.. why? population control. supposing the drug does make it out, how much will it cost? it sure as hell ain't gonna be free, even on the NHS. only the wealthiest of people - Bankers, Politicians, celebrities; the "Elite". They will be the only ones who can afford it anyway. the rest of us just have to hope we don't get afflicted, since it would still mean a slow and painful death for us. as for the question of is it right, I honestly couldn't give a straight answer, it's not something I think about. then again, if my theory ends up being what happens, personal opinion won't matter anyway. TL;DR: who cares, government would never let it happen, at least not for the working class majority.

My solution to the problem: remove the slave treaty that says it illegal to claim land on any planet/moon/asteroid in space. This will encourage private investors like space-x to expand. We'll hopefully be able to colonize other planets as soon as it is financially viable for that first step.

Assuming all those scientists now are working on alternative options wouldn't it be more of a reality of maybe making mars habitable? Or thinking of other solutions? Don't get me wrong I know this is a serious problem but random and selective culling is wrong. Everyone should have the right to live. The child limit is never going to work as you can see people already cannot fix that. And tell people to get forced sterilisation. Just try. Superpowers are the ones who have control and the easiest thing at this stage would be to drop a few bombs would it not? Very nice topic for discussion I'm not normally as interested.

MOVE ALL THE DUMB PEOPLE TO THE MOON

How about we pull a China and limit 2 children per couple. Everybody gets cured, nobody needs to die. Everything will be A-OK
-
If everyone had sex with horses instead of each other, overpopulation would no longer be an issue.
-
Create a common sense test that you have to pass before you have a child. If you fail you have to put your child up for adoption where it is raised in a family with parents who passed the test. Also if you fail they will sterilize you. This would work in the long run i bet because 75% of people would only be able to create 1 child resulting in a smaller population. Also the baby will have a stable home. Its a win win

Assuming that we haven't got our Colonization ball rolling yet, I would probably put a limited child policy in place until we establish ourselves on new planets
-
We don't need to do anything ... People will still kill each other and people will still die ... But no matter what, this world will never be overpopulated This planet will never be too small
-
No more 17 and counting Child policy laws sound good

Everyone should be cured because population growth is exponential whether you cure disease or not. Diseases are more common in later stages of life anyway, so, while they do cause death, they're less likely to deter child birth. And they don't stop overpopulation, they just slow it down. With everyone cured of all disease, it increases the potential that one brilliant mind will emerge from the people of the world capable of solving world issues that overpopulation creates.

Cure all diseases. Make everyone educated(and want to get educated), go to space. Colonize the universe(at least whatever is possible to get to). Hummens win at lief
