Because video game value depreciates quickly. Dragon Age Inquisition, game of the year last year, will become 100% FREE to people who subscribe to EA access.
So, realistically, you can sign up for the service for a month for $5, play DA:I, and cancel your subscription to play the best gaming experience of 2014. Games don't hold their value, and the price is completely justified.

If you are paying for the subscription then you are technically paying for the game. Meriam Webster defines free as "not costing any money"... In this case the subscription costs you money and thus the game isn't free.
