Elemental primaries and ciphers drop when Skolas dies.
The only thing he would get from the chest is ship/shader/emblem/queens weapons and maybe an exotic if its his first POE this week.
So he didn't miss his shot at the best rewards, he did miss seeing the Queens bootyhole, but he's a little young for that anyway.
