A Logical Look at Why TTK is Overpriced

When you really look at the prices this DLC is sorely overpriced. The legendary edition comes with the game, both expansions and TTK for $60. And TTK is $40 alone so what that implies is... Destiny- $10 TDB- $5 HoW- $5 TTK- $40 And you can bet your ass that if you want to buy the original expansions separately for some reason they will still be $20. Which if that is true then the legendary edition, even valuing the game at $10, should be $90... $80 if you value the expansions at $15, which is what the collectors addition with more stuff costs. Now for those people saying "the value depreciated" I'm taking that into consideration. For a game as large as Destiny valuing it at only $10 after only a year is absurd, I would assume $30 maybe $20. Even the expansions! HoW is only a few weeks old and its value is going to drop to less than TDB's value in the same period of being live? Also consider knowing Bungie's track record with past DLCs, people are going to consider paying 2/3rds of the original game price for a likely third amount of content. This to me doesn't sit well with me at all. They aren't losing my money because it's too much, they are losing my money because their business model is f-cking stupid. Edit: Before the trolls start coming in, I said logical, not without anger and sass.

  • A logical understanding of how game prices work: When each Gears of War game came out, I spent $50 to get each one. That's 3x$50=$150. $200 if you bought Judgment Day or whatever. When my old college roommate got his first Xbox I bought him the 3 game bundle for $40... Did I feel cheated? No. Common sense says if you wait and buy the bundle you'll pay less and get more. That's how games have always worked. That's how it's been in my decade and a half of playing Xbox. Overpriced is a relative concept, so your logical path is filled with fallacies based on your own personal view. At over 1000 hours played and $95 spent (before I bought an Xbox and Destiny for my fiancé) that equates to under a dime per hour of entertainment/fun. Common argument? "It's 1000 hours of the same content"; congratulations, you've discovered the concept of "replay value". I play with family and friends around the world, for under a dime. Try going to a movie or dinner for a dime. If you have 500-2000 hours and complain, you're a moron. No one is forcing to you play or to buy the game. If you have that many hours the assumption is that you are getting your money's worth. If you weren't having fun, why would you play for hundreds of more hours? If you don't have that many hours quit if you feel cheated. Most people who have grown up and understand a little about the world, have realized that this is a super cheap investment when compared to time spent. In other words, you get more bang for your buck than just about anything else... But sure, let's whine about it bring overpriced when people who understand the above and enjoy the game have already bought it because they have fun. I'm sure a company whose goal is making money will lower the price for a handful of whiners.

$20 for Destiny, $40 for TTK, DLCs bundled in for free. $20 for a game a year after release isn't terribly uncommon, and bear in mind that online dependant games like Destiny depreciate one hell of a lot faster then single player games. I'm sick of explaining this so I'm not going to go into detail for like the 5th time, but their business model is sound. Your understanding of it is not. It's not bloody uncommon for things to be this much cheaper after a year, especially if they're in a shiny bundle. They're not trying to sell Destiny. They're trying to sell TTK. It just so happens that Destiny and the previous DLCs are required to play TTK. The logical step is then making it so people who don't already have Destiny can pay a bit extra to access, while still paying the full target price for TTK.
