1.) They didn't know where it was located. 2.) Incineration Cannon. 3.) They filled a role comparable to mercenaries in the Covenant. 4.) Yes. 5.) Not most of it, just part of it. Considering that most Unggoy alive are in servitude, most of them remained in servitude.
