The next morning, Paul Varjak awakens in his bed, fully clothed from the night before. As he awakens, he sees Holly's cat mask atop a marble statue in his room, and he smiles to himself as he remembers the previous night. Getting out of bed, he grabs his own dog mask and climbs out onto the fire escape, climbing down to Holly's apartment window. He opens and climbs through the window, playfully woofing at Cat sitting on the couch, and then calls out for Holly to see if she's home. When she doesn't respond, he walks towards her front door and looks outside. As he does so, he spots his "decorator" climbing the stairs to his apartment, and he quickly shuts the door, running back out onto the fire escape and rapidly climbing back into his own apartment.
Just as shes about to knock, Paul opens the door and greets her with his mask on, saying "Trick or Treat" as he lets her in. She calls him crazy, but admits that she loves him regardless. He then tells her that they need to talk, and emphasizes that he needs to have a serious discussion with her.
Paul tells her that he wants to end it, and no longer be her personal call boy in exchange for helping publish his books. She tries to brush off his determination to leave her by writing him a check for $1000 so that he can take a vacation while he rethinks his decision. He refuses and promptly says that he no longer needs her as he has a check of his own coming in from a new book he is soon to publish.
As he leaves the apartment, he tells her that for her next call boy, she should find someone his size so that she doesn't have to get the suits tailored again. He then slams the door, walks out of the building and takes to the streets of New York in search of Holly.
