The epilogue of Halo 3:ODST (Johnson talking to/about the Engineer "Virgil") takes place one month after the events of the game. Shouldn't he have been killed in the fight with 343 Guilty Spark by that time?
Am I mistaken about the amount of time that transpired between Halo 2 and 3 or was this a massive oversight by Bungie?

Halo 3: ODST takes place on 10/20 and 10/21. The first half of Halo 3 occurs on 11/17, and Johnson dies on 12/11.

Halo 3 doesn't make a whole lot of distinction with that timeline does it?

No it does not. The joint UNSC-Covenant strike force spent 3 weeks in slipspace on the way to the Ark.
