The "hiatus"
In its Fifth Assessment Report in 2013, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change found that the temperature of the Earth increased at a rate of 0.22 Fahrenheit (0.12 Celsius) per decade from 1951-2012. It also found that the rate of warming from 1998-2012 had slowed to 0.09F (0.05C) per decade.
This slowdown in the rate of warming, called a “hiatus,” was initially perplexing to climate scientists. It was inconsistent with expectations that global temperatures would rise at similar or even greater rates than they had in the latter half of the 20th century as the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere continued to rise.
There were a number of proposed explanations for the hiatus, including natural variability and heat accumulating in the oceans. Although these studies are still equally valid, we expect our finding to provide additional clarity and answers to this question.
The method of data collection matters
The ERSST (Extended Reconstructed Sea Surface Temperature) data set provides global observations of sea surface temperature from the 1800s to present. Much of the data comes from measurements taken by ships at sea. From the earliest records of sea surface temperature, measurements were made by dropping a bucket over the side of the ship, bringing up some water and measuring the temperature of that water.
Just prior to World War II, many ships began switching the method they used to measure temperatures. Rather than using a bucket, they began measuring water temperature at the ship’s engine intakes. The water temperature measured in this way is known to be warmer than if measured using buckets. Because these two methods yield differing temperature measurements, the switch in methodology created an artificial shift, or bias, unrelated to climate in temperature records.
In recent decades, there has been another switch to a greater use of buoys rather than ships for ocean observations. Buoys tend to report a slightly cooler temperature than ships, resulting in another bias between the two sources of data.
Basically previous data collection methods were creating unaccounted for biases in the data.
The new version of the ERSST data set more completely accounts for the changes in observing methods and technologies than previous versions, making the data more consistent across time. This makes it possible to compare temperature data collected from locations around the world and over many decades, improving the accuracy of temperature trend estimates.
Adjustments were also made to the land air surface temp record to include areas not preciously included, most notably the arctic, where temperatures have been rising most rapidly.
With the improvements to the land and ocean data sets and the addition of two more years of data, NCEI scientists found that there has been no hiatus in the global rate of warming. This finding is consistent with the expected effect of increasing greenhouse gas concentrations and with other observed evidence of a changing climate such as reductions in Arctic sea ice extent, melting permafrost, rising sea levels, and increases in heavy downpours and heat waves.
....
This work highlights the importance of data stewardship and continuously striving to improve the accuracy and consistency of temperature data sets.
Lol my friend in school told me global warming was a hoax and I'm like "bish wut".
-
Come on guys, you can clearly see that the trend is starting in the 1940s. That's when we started mass producing things. Between then and now is when corporations bought our government. When you drive down the highway and see smoke stacks, it shouldn't be a surprise that its negatively affecting the environment. This is third grade science.

Edited by Sober As A Bird: 6/7/2015 3:52:38 PMGlobal warming is a scam, I'm going to drive few laps around my city today in my gas guzzling Jeep just because I can. Then fill it up with premium and do it again just to spite you. And I might even go out and impulse buy a new handgun! Good thing those are illegal in England so gun crime doesn't exist.

Let's ask al gore what he thinks

This is stupid

Edited by gargantuer: 6/8/2015 2:59:47 PMWow this is actually pretty persuading.
too bad global warming is a damn lie
-
It's disgusting what we are doing to our planet. I'll go as far to say humans shouldn't s Exist for the fate they will bring to the other species

77777 (What if this "hiatus" is actually the beginning of the next ice age?)
-
Warning all who venture within this thread, within awaits two opposing sides neither of which posts any evidence to support their side but they are screaming that their data disproves the other. You have been warned...

o fuk no

Cite your sources!!!

The earth goes through a natural phase of heating and cooling, as far as the impact we make on it we can never 100% determine

U like to copy and paste without following the rules of citing.

Ok, I'm waiting for the Flood to hate on me. Mankind cannot change/control the climate. If so, where there are droughts, make it rain; where there are floods, make it stop. Mankind CAN change the environment though. Factories in the Ruhr Valley did cause acid rain in the mountains to the east. The area around the Belogio resort's man made lake in Vegas was more humid. Deforestation such as in Brazil can cause a rise in CO2. I guess all those campfires that the cavemen built caused the end of the ice age Funny how a lot of solar power companies here in the U.S. got tax breaks and grants, gave huge donations to certain political parties and still filed for bankruptcy.
-
We've actually been in a cooling trend. People were ridiculous for ever thinking we have a significant impact on the climate. It's never been proven, and is mostly due to the sun's cycles.
-
*Steps outside.* *Weather hasn't changed.* *Same as every year.* *Laughs at alarmists.*
-
The Earth has been warming since the end of the Ice Age, hence why we are no longer in an ice age...
-
Cause it's fake. They want to implement a Carbon Tax to accomplish 2 goals. 1. Control Behavior of political opponents and reward political allies with wavers. 2. Global wealth redistribution via trade of carbon credits from developed high polluters to undeveloped low polluters. All they need is regulations and they literally own the air you breathe. The air you burn for heat, power, driving, even what foods you eat based on the CO2 needed to produce it.

Edited by cxkxr: 6/7/2015 1:41:08 PMglobal warming has been thoroughly debunked. only pseudo-scientists are holding on to that doctrine for dear life in order to maintain their reputation.

O great now it's the climate change religious fanatics, there worse then the regular religious fanatics.
-
Do people not realize the earth used to be alot hotter than it is today? During the Cretaceous period a large portion of North America was actually an ocean. This is just a cycle
-
If global warming is real then how can you explain this snow ball? Best quote ever
-
So all the terrible electric cars didn't work?
-
What people don't realize is that "global warming" doesn't just mean Oh shit it's gonna burn! It means that the Poles are melting, causing more moisture to be in the atmosphere. This moisture messes with how weather works. It screws with shit. Summers are getting longer and winters are getting harsher. Spring and Fall are both getting shorter. This is where the changes are becoming noticeable.
-
It snowed in the south in May is it global cooling now?
-
Why do you keep reminding me of all the shitty things in the world?
