Last week, my fireteam and I (who were all 33's) charged into the 34 Prison of Elders with the intention of claiming the Etheric Light at the end, reaching the max level, and mercilessly slaughtering any minion of the Darkness that would dare stand in our way.
We stomped through the first four waves in about half an hour, wiping just once. Since we were a level below the enemies, we had done our research on Qodron and knew what had to be done to to beat him. Still, we were owning that Prison and with all the momentum we had, we were confident that we would emerge victorious.
We began round 5 and everything went sideways. The Eye of Qodron was nowhere to be seen and when found would often teleport away.
We were constantly being teleported to suicidal locations.
There were so many adds that we were never able to trade fire with anything without suffering heavy damage, and any damage that we inflicted was instantly negated when the add dropped into stasis and healed itself.
Once we were locked in the containment bubbles we almost always wiped -we just never went into them with full health, rarely could do enough damage to them to break free, and between the bubbles' health drain and the adds, were almost always wiped during containment.
You add in Trickle, the fact that the map has little cover, and Qodron's constant bombardment ignored what little cover we could scrape together (his shots even damage players THROUGH the ward of dawn -which is a new trick), and there was nothing we could do.
After about 4 hours of trying every tactic we could think of, the game freaked out and threw us back to orbit. We did not reenter the Prison until a couple of days later when we suffered an identical defeat and gave up after another hour of failing to survive the fifth wave.
We were furious, the encounter seemed incredibly unfair and excessively difficult. We decided to reach 34 by purchasing Varik's armor piece this week, so it was an understatement to say that we were discouraged to see that the 32 Prison boss was Qodron.
We were a little encouraged to read that the containment bubbles had been nerfed, both in the life drain and the boost granted by Jailbreaker.
(Partially because we guessed that since Bungie had nerfed the containment bubbles, that we weren't the only 33's to get locked into them with no way out.)
We also knew it would be an easier time due to the 32 difficulty rather than 34. However, we still were not eager to walk back into that fight. Still, we went back in there to claim what we needed.
With the level disadvantage gone, and the tweaks made to the containment bubbles, it was like a whole new fight. We were actually able to trade fire with enemies without being immediately forced to take cover and watch the Hobgoblin drop into stasis and heal itself.
We were actually able to kill the Eye of Qodron, as it no longer teleported away as a defense reflex.
We were able to hack our way out of the containment bubbles and continue the fight. (So long as we weren't already seriously injured when imprisoned, but that is good.)
We were not teleported to our doom anywhere near as much, and only once was I insta-killed by being teleported out of a containment bubble.
We were actually fighting, instead of just dying. Our shots mattered, we could stay alive long enough to pick up a downed fireteam member, and we were making progress.
It was still a frantic, challenging, prolonged fight, and it took about half an hour to take Qodron down. But it was now actually fun battle, not the slaughterhouse it had been before.
So I want to thank you Bungie. Thank you for tweaking that encounter and making it an enjoyable experience for my fireteam and I.
