Name one territory the U.S. Controls that isn't part of the 50 states or an unincorporated island/township. The U.S. Has never had an empire like Russia or England. Nor did the U.S. as an entity conquer any of the 50 states. The original 13(?) states where conquered before the U.S. was a country, the entire Central US and Alaska where bought off their original owners.... Am I missing something?

Again, doesn't make you an empire. An empire administrates a territory beyond the borders of its parent country, kinda like Afghanistan and Iraq was by America shortly after their respective wars, but with no plans to give the territory back.
